Been Around the Block

I have a question regarding terrain such as craters and hills with no "elements" such as trees or ruins etc. I am confused about these terrain pieces. Since they have defined borders I believe they are considered area terrain and would confer a 4+ save via the games workshop website. The rules for area terrain state that models have to be 2" or less from the border of the terrain to not confer a cover save to the unit they are firing at. Is that how you play it. I have seen some battle reports where models are on top of hills and are more than 2" away from the border and are not giving a 4+ save to the unit they are firing at. Also I have seen models on top of ruins that are not being blocked by line of sight. ARe they considered in cover. Also What if a crater blocks the feet of my unit , I would get a 4+ save but the craters do not impede my line of sight to the unit im firing at. Do you use the same 2" from the border of the terrain rule even though there are no elements to the terrain? Orrrr is it up to the players to decide before battle? Just would like to hear some thoughts. Thanks

Have a look at pages 21+22 of the BRB, Especially the bottom of the first column on page 21(When are models in cover)

Then have a look at Page 16.

Hills are area terrain, but not necessarily Cover-providing area terrain(like ruins, or forest); they provide cover based on LOS

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

each terrain piece is supposed to be declared before the game. here is what is usually played:

Hill: just cover if it obscures LoS to the model, not area terrain.

Crater: is usually area terrain and will grant a cover save if you are in it and will grant a cover save if yo are firing through more than 2" of it. as for shooting over craters, it would have to block part of the model.

Ruins: these are specifically stated in the BRB and have special rule that come with them. I don't have the page number on me. As for how i play it regarding area or not, i say if you are on the base or on any level, you're in terrain.

All cover must be designated at the start of the game, otherwise you use the examples in the book that make everything the units can stand in area terrain, and gives rules for cover from fences, trees, ect.

Discuss it beforehand with your opponants and come to a conclusion that suits everyone.
What the BRB, or anyone on here says, is irrelevant.

And if you forget to discuss it beforehand?

The only fair thing at that point is to use what's in the BRB, so it's absolutely relevant. Thanks for playing though.
