Subject: Begining Eldar List

Hey Everyone,
A couple of years ago I started to get into Eldar but other things came up and they sort of got pushed to the bottom of my hobby stack.
Anyways, this is the list I can run (maxed out) and was wondering where to go from here. What units would go well with what I already have to bump this up to 1500 or 1850?
I was thinking a Falcon with Fire Dragons and a couple of units of Shining Spears.....
HQ:
Farseer
Runes of warding/runes of witnessing/spirit stones/singing spear/fourtune/guide/eldrithch storm
Troop:
Dire Avengers x10
Exarch w/ PW and Shimmer Shield
Bladestorm
Wave Serpent w/ Spirit Stones/TL Bright Lnace/Star Engines
Dire Avengers x10
Exarch w/ PW and Shimmer Shield
Bladestorm
Wave Serpent w/ Spirit Stones/TL Bright Lnace/Star Engines
Comes out to 817 pts.
Cheers,
Falco

Well it really depends which points level you're aiming at, as this will affect what type of list to use. 1,500pt Eldar lists can often be very different in build type to 1,850.
On a side note, don't take Shining Spears, they have a high points cost and don't really ever achieve much. Possibly the weakest unit in the current Eldar codex IMO. Although if this is a list that is only for fun and you like the unit, go ahead.
Hope this helps.

Good to know about the Shining Spears, thanks!
I was looking at something like this for 1500:
HQ:
Farseer
Runes of warding/runes of witnessing/spirit stones/singing spear/fourtune/guide/eldrithch storm
Troop:
Dire Avengers x10
Exarch w/ PW and Shimmer Shield
Bladestorm
Wave Serpent w/ Spirit Stones/TL Bright Lnace/Star Engines
Dire Avengers x10
Exarch w/ PW and Shimmer Shield
Bladestorm
Wave Serpent w/ Spirit Stones/TL Bright Lnace/Star Engines
Pathfinders x5
Elite:
Fire Dragons x5
Exarch
Heavy:
Falcon w/TL BL/SS/Holo Fields
This leaves me with about 320 pts....what do you think would work well with this list?

I think a Wave Serpent for the Fire Dragons would be good, as they'll need to get close and they are a good way to do that. And then maybe if you have the points swap out the Farseer for Eldrad.

Just a few tips on the units you will use most:
Never bring a power wep on the dire avenger exarch, give him dual pults and bladestorm its cheaper and keeps you focused
Brightlances are usually a bad idea on waveserpents, you want them with cheaper upgrades focused either toward shooting or movement, not both. In your case, I would bring either a scatterlaser and spirit stones, or star engines and spirit stones.
Pathfinders aren't that good. They can be effective they are just too expensive for what they do; I don't recommend bringing them.
NEVER EVER bring a fire dragon exarch, it is just wasted points that could be used somewhere else. Also NEVER EVER put fire dragons in a falcon, they always go in a wave serpent. The serpent is cheaper, has a kick ass shield.
Your farseer rarely needs 3 powers. I would only ever give him 3 powers if he was on a jetbike. If you are putting him in a shooty unit like dire avengers then, you want to have him with guide/doom. It is much more effective than fortune/doom because if your dire avengers are getting shot at alot or charged, you let them out in the wrong place.
I hope you can use this advice and good luck with a 1500 pt list. I'm going to try to perfect one myself.

I would make a 5 man DAVU to put into your falcon
Then give your dragons a wave serpent with scatter laser and spirit stones
Think about adding a walker
Also maybe including another 5 man dragons with a serpent
Eldrad is awesome and he can go in the falcon with the DAVU

I'm not seeing much CC, I personally am a big fan of Striking Scorpions but Banshees and Harlequins can also be useful.
It looks like the Farseer has got a few too many upgrades, probably stick with Guide/Doom, Spirit Stones, Runes of Witnessing, and if your opponent regularly uses psykers Runes of Warding.
Power weapon and shimmershield on a Dire Avenger unit is mostly wasted points. Ideally they're shooting from a nice comfortable sheltered position behind a Wave Serpent so the extra toughness doesn't help (not that it was very good anyway...), and you lose shooting from the Exarch.

My 2 cents-
I really dislike Falcons. There's better things to spend the points on.
I do like Fire Prisms, and war walkers with scatter lasers. Taking Fire Prisms in pairs works best. More dakka is always a good thing, and my war walkers always make their points back in transport kills alone, let alone what happens when I pump them into a squad of something.
Eldrad is your friend, casting 3 spells(being able to use any of them, and 2 of the same) is freaking awesome.
I'm also not a fan of my bladestorming da, because they seem to always let me down.(Everytime they get out of transports they die)
Fire dragons are pretty much a must, you'll pretty much always use them.
If you want something like a shining spear, guardian jet bikes are decent, and make for good last minute contentions.
I've seen a lot of Eldar do good with Seer Councils, so that's something to keep in mind as well for future builds.
Finally we end on my favorite unit, Warp Spiders. They are an awesome harassment Unit that is very good at taking people mostly off guard. When I play there is generally always something I can warp in front of, shoot, and then warp back behind into some safety. They make an excellent kiting unit as well.

i was also thinking about starting an eldar army
Dose
DA phenoix lord
x3 DA /w exarch in WaveS
x3 fire prisims
(+ whatever upgrades)
sound like it could make a viable 1000-1500 pt list?
DA would make good anti infintry while the FP would cream any armor

I would avoid pretty much every Phoenix Lord. They cost a lot of points, and don't seem to get the job done for me. Again, I also don't rely on my DA to get anything done, because each time i have, I was disappointed. If you do go the DA route, make sure you get a Doomseer, he'll prove to be invaluable to you.

Here is my opinion.
If you can swap your farseer for Eldrad..
I would go for the Fire Dragon in a falcon since they need to get close and the Falcon is one of the most survival tank in all 40K.
Warp Spider are ncie.. they have 3+ save and S6 gun and they can move in the assault phase.. and they dont need transport.
As I read no shimmer shield on the DA if you take blade storm. You have 2 choices here... either Shimmershield and Defend or 2 Catapult and Bladestorm, but dont mix, thats the worst they wont be good at anything.
I would avoid Phoenix Lord, they are unreliable since they dont have Invul.. on the other side they have Eternal Warrior so they can be insta killed... but power weapon will make quick stew out of them.
Avoid Harlequin (too weak), Ranger (too expensive), Guardian (too fragile and expensive)
It also depend what setting you are playing.
Are you willing to be extremely competitive or is this just casual play?
If its competitive.. its harder.. if you play casual, then there are many other thing I would propose.
Ok one thing is sure, you cant go wrong with 5 FireD.
I kinda like the Dark Reaper, good MEQ killer with nice 48" range, but they get quite expensive.
Howling banshee are sweet, all power weapon.. but they are squishy... they have to assault or they're going to get owned
All and all.. it depend on your play style and what you like.

Eldar from the Ixialen Craftworld (6000pts) / Chaos from the Bloody dawn company (5000pts) / Imperial Guard from the Minerva 3rd Battalion (3000pts) / Crimson Drop compagny (BA) 2500 pts
No my avatar is not one of my unit, its a very nice work of conversion wouldn't you say? |

You are right about the Pheonix Lords. They are in general they are over-costed and don't even have an invulnerable save. Yeah, Asurmen does have one, but doesn't have much decent wargear to back this up. However, the one Pheonix Lord that I do like to take is Jain Zar with a big unit of Banshees in a WS. As well as being the cheapest, she strikes at S7 and I10 in the first round of combat, and if you're lucky, her high weapon skill will be striking against WS1 for that as well, not to mention her AP2 triskele firing from a model with as high a BS as her.

I have seen some pretty neat lists with Jain in them, but have never had the chance to use or face off against her.
