I was persuaded by another user, Eirikur, to set up a blog on my Death Korp of Krieg as they progress. The army is literally in the early stages with myself starting with the Rough Riders (Death Riders) who will be followed by the Company Command Squad & the rest. When I've purchased them. For information on the background of the army itself the article is here. In short this army is for the 2013 UK Doubles Tournament where I shall be partnering a friend who will have more Guard. The army itself will be fully Forgeworld Krieg. Not a single plastic GW model will be amongst its ranks, as I am sick to death of Cadian & Catachan models and I have been promising myself a Krieg army for years.
The army is being painted with the fast attack option first as they will have slightly different uniforms to the infantry who will make up the rest of the army. Once they're out of the way I can concentrate on the rest of the army and not get my colours confused! The bases will be covered in mud & the debris of war/trenches. The make up of the army is in the high number of Heavy Bolters it contains and I will be striving to make each one as individual as is possible, whether with the models themselves or the bases. The unit I'm looking forward to most of all are the Special Weapons Squad which will be armed with sharpshooting weapons - I've a few ideas for them, which I'll cover at a later date.
With the way I paint I have to do each model individually. I've been painting Warhammer bits & pieces since 1995 and one thing I've discovered over the years is that I can not paint models in a 'production line' method. It is anathema to me, I get bored and can't be bothered to do a good job, which I then regret as soon as I've finished the army. So this time I'm trying to paint at the best of my ability at all times.
Anyway, on with some pictures.
First set are from September 2011, when I had first recieved the Death Riders from a friend (in return for a FW Ryza Pattern Vanquisher tank & Valkyrie kit). There are older pictures of individual models of the unit but this was as far as I'd gotten by September;
The unit (with painted trooper & Ridemaster):

*At time of writing the Commissar is nearly finished. I tidied up the horse a bit here & there, finished the skull armour and have painted the Commissar himself. Just needs details & metalwork added. All of the Death Riders will be based when the unit as a whole (when I have all 10) have been painted.
I shall update this as and when stuff is finished or has been started on, but for now it's cracking good fun to paint Krieg.
After a lot of hard graft, plenty of mistakes, swearing, cursing, preening & many troubled glances, I have finished my Death Korp of Krieg Commissar!
Originally I had promised this model to myself for when I had completed the rest of the unit, the other 9 Death Riders but...I wanted to get it done and I don't think I've ever felt so much stress or elation from painting a model. Whilst I say it has been stressful it's been wonderfully relaxing to do, just those mistakes that made me howl.
How I went about painting this fellow (colours & so on)
Spoiler:
The model itself then. When I approached this model I wanted to make him significantly different from his unit whilst maintaining the overall theme. From the start I wanted him on a horse that had a different colour than the other Death Riders and originally I hit upon painting it black. However I rejected this as I concluded that there would be too much black upon the model and to make it stand out he should be mounted on a grey or white horse. I had intended for the horse to be white but I got as far as the grey and decided I preferred it - whilst lighter than the brown horses of the unit, it wasn't too light. I finished the grey highlights off with a thinned blue wash to suggest, in some lights, a colder tone. Saddle, tack, harness (with ammunition pouches) & saddlebags (as well as the Commissars laspistol holster) were all painted with a mixture of vallejo Brown Leather lightened with English Uniform which seems to create a wonderful 'patina' effect on the leather. The saddlecloth is painted in varying tones of Vallejo Dark Sea Blue, lightened with Black Grey. Underneath the horses neck is a brass/gold plaque with the aquila upon it. The piping on the neck is in Vallejo Dark Sea Blue, topped with brass, whilst the 'bit' they lead into, in front of the saddle, is in Badab Black washed Boltgun Metal. The blanket upon the back started of as Vallejo Dark Sea Blue and had Black Grey mixed into it for highlights.
The horses mask was based with Leather Brown and lightened with a mixture of Leather Brown, English Uniform, Beige Brown & Iraqi Sand. The skull armour for the horse started off with a base of Beige Brown and was lightened with Iraqi Sand until I added the extreme highlight of Iraqi Sand mixed with Citadel Skullwhite. The hooves have been left unpainted as, when the model is based, I will be applying thick layers of mud to the lower legs of the mount and on to the Commissars boot soles. A minor detail is the red book sitting in its leather bag at the very front of the model.
When I moved on to the Inquisitor I wanted to retain the dark tone of the army, for him to be united with his unit whilst adhering to true Commissar form. So his trenchcoat recieved the customary Commissars black treatment, highlighted with mixtures of Black & Citadel Liche Purple. For the lightest highlights I added in a bit of Iraqi Sand. The braid across his chest is painted from Biege Brown up to Iraqi Sand to tie his uniform in with the horses armour, whilst brass buttons tie in with the rest of the models brass/gold metalwork. Epaulets, binoculars, gasmask filter, metallic parts of the mask etc are all in gold/brass to keep it consistant with the general feel of the model & army*. The gasmask itself started off as Leather Brown worked up to Iraqi Sand & then washed with Devlan Mud. Cuffs & lapels/collar are painted in the same grey, Vallejo Black Grey, as the units cuffs & collars to unify him with them. Spurs & stirrups are finished in mithril silver whilst the sword has a brass hilt & the scabbard is a mixture of boltgun metal with mithril highlights given a lovely coat of Badab Black.
The coat of varnish, which was not present when I took the pictures below, adds a rather nice sheen to the metal bits.
*As Krieg are based off of WW1 French/Belgian/German uniforms I took the vew that a more 'Steampunk' paint scheme might be in order - browns & brass to be used alongside the dark uniform colours.
Images of the Commissar: Please note I was aware of the brass 'dash' on the binoculars leather bit. I have corrected this.
EDIT: And now I've realised I didn't do the metal on the medals. Always something...

Thanks very much! I'm working hard on the other Death Riders now, finishing off the third trooper before starting on the fourth & fifth.
Finally decided on my colour scheme for my infantry. Deep, dark grey uniforms with dark brown cuffs & colours. Tried it out on my Company Commander & it looks rather nice.
That Commissar is terrific. I've always really liked the Krieg commissars and you really do the model justice well done indeed looking forward to more.

2017 Model Count-71
Been away for several weeks on holiday amidst mountains & tundra, rolling grassland and the most beautiful rivers and waterfalls. I visited towns and villages, did a spot of hunting and dodged a few dragons. Yes, Skyrim claimed another victim.
Anyhow, been back to work on this project, trying to make up for lost time, and have finished changing my DKoK Senior Officer from his previous colour scheme to his new one, which will be the standard for my infantry. Also started on another Rough Rider. Back to the painting desk I go.
Please note, on the below image I've just remembered that I hadn't sorted out the gorget about his neck - doing that now. At some point in the future I will upload at least one image where there aren't any mistakes, I promise.

Really love the black and gold paint scheme. The models are so damn good on the DCK, and your painting skills seem to do them justice, keep it up! Consider me subscribed.

Thank you very much sir! Does me good to hear that people think that I am doing the models justice - it's one of the things that always worries me!
The colouring is not black, just the lighting gives it that appearance. It's a mixture of blue-greys & grey - Vallejo's Dark Sea Blue, Dark Blue Grey & Black Grey.

Good grief! What can this be? Another update, so soon? Well I've just finished my Standard Bearer for the Company Command Squad which, beside the Company Commander, gives a real indication of the colour scheme for my infantry.
Some pictures;
Sorry for blurred quality of the images, I do not own a half-decent, or even quarter-decent, camera.

Command Squad is now 80% finished! Just have the final Guardsman to paint. Hopefully will have photos taken & uploaded by Sunday. Must admit, I am rather chuffed with them so far.
Right. Company Command Section is now finished & based, using the Secret Weapon Minatures mud & water kit. Whilst the basing kit was a bit tricker than I'd hoped it would (rather than mixing nicely it degenerated into small lumps), I've managed to make a creditable job on it - unfortunately I couldn't get the mediocre cameras we have in the house to take a decent enough picture of it - they do, however, look the part. Once again apologies for the low quality of the pictures - I will get someone to take nice ones for me with a proper camera at some point soon.
EDIT: Played with the images a bit, they look a lot better now;
EDIT EDIT THE SECOND: Wind died down and sun came out this afternoon, so I took some newer images with the updated 'mud' bases
Here be the pictures;

Thanks. I was pleasantly surprised how it turned out - incidentally the above images show the fourth, and final, attempt to do the mud. I'm using the Special Weapon miniatures 'Instant Water & Mud' kit, along with bits from their trench basing kit.
Whilst I followed their tutorial I hit on a few snags. Firstly the mud was coming out looking like chocolate at various stages of drying out. Second it was drying far lighter than I'd hoped. So I mixed in some FW Weathering Powder (fresh mud) to give it a darker look and applied extra 'Realistic water' to the bases to give the impression of where the mud was still wet/small pools of water sat.
Biggest challenge with this basing stuff is going to be one of my Special Weapons squad bases, which will have a sniper & spotter laying in a shell crater filled with water. Going to be a tough one to do.
Also; new pictures of Deathrider's I've finished so far. Their uniform has ended up as a grey rather than the blue-grey, which I had originally intended them to be. I might change the coat linings to a red.

Sorry Old habits die hard. Spent so long being complained at on forums for not spoilering images for 'slower computers' that it's just become instinctive.
I'll remove the spoilers from 'em all later.

Don't worry about it, it is not too much of a problem - just the standard of connection and computer should be more than good enough for the vast majority of people these days that spoiler tags are not really needed
After a year and a couple of months I'm rebooting the project! New ideas, more models, getting busy with it once again. Concept of the army has changed rather. Whereas before the intention was to fill the army with Heavy Bolters, now it's all about the humble flamer. The premise remains the same, one half of a Death Korp of Krieg Doubles List, using the Guard Codex. I provide the scoring units & anti-infantry whilst my Doubles partner provides the heavy hitting side of things. To this end my list now consists;
HQ Company Command Squad: Vox caster, Regimental Standard, Autocannon
Troops Platoon Command Squad: Vox caster Meltagun, Plasmagun
3 Infantry Sections: Vox caster, Flamer
2 Veteran Sections: Vox caster, 2 Flamers, Heavy Flamer
Fast Attack Rough Rider Troop: 10 Riders, 2 Meltaguns
Heavy Support Griffon Heavy Mortar
The entire army will be built as though it were a Platoon of Sappers/Assault Pioneers. The regular infantry sections will carry saws, hammers, spades - essentially tools of their trade as engineers cutting/smashing a path through defences. The Veterans will be the Assault Sappers, using the more heavily armoured DKoK Grenadier's to display their purpose - I'm not sure whether I'll leave them with the Hellguns or convert them to carry lasguns instead. I decided to go with the Grenadier models because FW do a Heavy Flamer set for them. Point is with their 'trench armour' they'll be imposing units visually. The Death Riders now have a pair of Meltagun's to enhance their striking power so they can perform against vehicles and infantry - the sacrifice of 2 Hunting Lances will, I hope, be worth it.
With the Griffon I intend to create a centre piece for the army. It will have a mineplough and also a crane of sorts at the back. The mortar itself is intended to clear obstacles in the platoons path - by the time I've finished with it will be festooned with tools. The infantry will also carry tools of their trade, I found a supplier of 28mm scale toolsets that fit rather well, and will also be equipped with trench fighting weapons - so far I've equipped a few with maces.
1. First three chaps of an infantry section (front)
2. First three chaps of an infantry section (side showing tools & maces)
3. Heavy Weapons team for CCS - whilst they're standing there with a Heavy Bolter, they will be getting an Autocannon in the near future.
very nice i like
ur bases look a bit plain, may i suggest a nice and muddy base for all ur dkoks, dkoks are full trenches right and mud seems up the alley
solid good models mate,
oh and friendly advice, ready my signature
I'm basing each squad as it's completed so that I can get the most out of the mud kit & resin 'water' - I don't want to waste any as I have to mix up quite a bit at any one time. So far only the CCS & the DKoK Deathrider Commissar have their bases sorted (although the Commissar's needs a little more work, such as additional details like barbed wire). I've literally just picked up the project after a long period of inactivity, wasn't feeling the urge to do any work on 'em for over a year, so it's just a matter of picking up from where I left off, sort of, and work from there.
As for the pictures - when the army is finished I have a friend who wishes to take pictures of them using his lightbox, so the final images of the army will be good ones hopefully! Until then I'll just pop pictures up as and when regardless of the background.
