I don't know what it is, I just dislike them and Termagants. The only gants I usually field are devilgants - and I'm debating swapping them out for something.

Is there a way to be competitive without Tervigons?

I guess it's mostly the fluff. Birth gants on the battlefield? Hows that fun? And then the extreme randomness of it's performance... you could roll high and never go dry, or you could roll 3 ones on the first try...

I don't like gant's because ... I just don't. I have no rational reason.

I understand 40k has randomness, but it feels like the Tervi has a higher randomness reliance. I'd rather have Catalyst and Onslaught available to Tyrants or Zoans (or primes!) and some kind of endless wave benefit for Hormagaunts and/or Termagants.

But yeah - Are Tyranids essentially limited to stealer spam or Tervis?

You can be competitive without tervigons. It's just that the tervigons make it easier. It's a force-multiplier that can benefit the entire army. Thus, it gives your entire army an advantage that it normally wouldn't have without it....just like KFF Big Meks, Tau pathfinders, eldar farseers, Fateweaver and Space Marine Chapter Tactics.

That's why good players use them in their tyranid armies. It's one thing if your unit benefits another 1 unit. It's something else when you unit can benefit multiple units.

Now you're making me feel bad :(

I get what you're saying I just ... I just hate the units. That and I suck at modeling/converting so building one, let alone 3-5 is going to be a huge chore.

Then dont, theres nothing wrong with not having them.

If you dont enjoy playing something, then why are you playing it? Go for whats fun if your goal is fun.

The easiest way to convert them is to take a carnifex and give it 6 scything talon "spider legs". As long as it's a little different from your regular carnifex.

Mine is real simple. I just took one of my many carnifexes and added another set of scything talons to it.

I'm not a big fan of tervigons myself, mostly because I've never sat down and modeled a set. I love Gaunts with devourers. 300 points for 90 18" S4 attacks. My biggest problem with the tervigon is Most of my games end up being kill point games, and spawning extra kill points for my opponent just never seems like a good idea. But a friend of mine that runs 3 in his army swears by them, and it's pretty cool to see the tide building as he roll them across the field.

Also, you have to consider that even if you roll a double on your first turn, you still have a 6W S6 T6 Monstrous Creature, which could do a lot amongst the enemy lines.

I like them just because of they're force multiplying potential. I wish more tyranids could have similar abilities but oh well.

As for making then, I made one out of a stock carnifex kit and gave it 4 scything talons for legs. For my other 3 I bought a couple OOP carnies off ebay, added talons and a couple gaunts under its belly. Viola.

As to being competitive without them, I reccomend a reserve hammer style list which has been a lot of for me. Or Stealer shock is an option

I've found once the Tervigon is done birthing units, it's primary uses are as a tarpit, an objective holder, and to give Feel No Pain to your Trygons and Hive Tyrants.

Yeah. Honestly, it sucks in combat.
