Not seen any thread and the questions I may have may or may not be related to the storyline.

1) Why are words in italics in this book.?

Example:

Spoiler:

page 174
"followed by a dull crump of psychically resonant grenades."

page 168
"the vatic aspect of her powers saw the potential to know the course of the future in perfect clarity."

page 154
'they could go into your mind and ...........change things?' asked Kai.
'they could go into your mind and do anything et all', repeated Gregoras.

page 275
" Promethean Ark and Twilights Fade followed the cutter, their blue hot engines burning like bright pulsars in the early evening sky."

Any pattern I am missing?

2) how does this read to you, especially the english native speakers?

Spoiler:

page 355
"...but in his heart of hearts he knew that this dreary new age could not sustain such legends without scoffing at the
sturm und drang
of those heady, bloody days."

I know some words are lent/borrowed, but a line of 3 ? Now its always fun to see a combination of languages into something new.
But is it understandable for you, what was meant with these 3 words in italics?

3) ThunderWarriors vs Astartes? Who would win 1:1 ?

Spoiler:

page357
'Tell me of these "Space Marines". What are they like?'
......
'They are not our equal, but they are warriors fit to bear the eagle'.
'And so should they be,' said Babu Dhakal. 'They stand on our shoulders to achieve greatness. without us, they would not exist.'
'They are but pale shadows of what we were,' said Ghota.
'No they are the next step in the evolution of the superwarrior, it is we who are pale shadows of what they are. Yes, we are stronger and hardier than them, but our genetic legacy was never meant to last. Old night may be over but for us a new night is falling. We were not built to live beyond unity, did you know that?'
'No, my subedar.'
'Our genes were always flawed but I cannot decide whether that was deliberate or simple ignorance. i hope its for the latter, but I suspect the former.'
......

hint: Ghota won a fight against 3 WE, a EC , a nigh death DG and a LW marine, killing the EC marine in that process.
The text above is his report back to his master.

So?
ThunderWarriors as the gen-enhanced troops of the Unity Wars. Died out as they seem to lack the 'immortality' of the legiones astartes.

Italicis are often used in Titles, Foriegn words, to indicate significance, or for emphasis.

Good points.

Maybe both. Seems these warriors were created to fight the wars for unity on old earth, but their existance was limited to a certain period of time, by means like the lack of reproduction , etc.
They were a tool, one to replace with something new, the astartes.
How many of us thought the gene-enhanced soldiery of old earth was inferior to astartes in every aspect?
Now they could be superior in some ways but the whole package you get with astartes is so much better to make it worth the swap?

Based on outcast dead, thunder warriors whoop SM ass when it comes to power and technique. They do however age.

I found the Thunder Warrior stuff one of the most interesting things. We have to remember that Earth was a radiation-filled wasteland rules over by gene-troops, genocidal madmen, tech-barbarians etc, and that the technology did not exist for better marks of power armour.

Like the earlier HH books say about the Custodes, the Astartes were created to be sustained - they can be mass-produced, self-sufficient through their monastic/brotherly culture, and are pretty stable, which is what you need to fight over hundreds of years over the vast distances of the galaxy, away from the Emperor and your leaders. By comparison, Custodes are completely different, being made individually, using an older technique requiring a lot of investment, and trained to work as individual warriors, as best befits their bodyguard/detective/security role. In The Last Heretic, it's noted that, while they are amazing warriors individually, they are not as good as Astartes in a battle situation - since they fight like five amazing guys, rather than a cohesive 'squad'. That's fine - because they're not created for that.

So, what was needed of the Thunder Warriors? They needed to be tough enough to weather a post-atomic wasteland WITHOUT power armour technology and crazy enough to scare the feth out of the mental techno barbarians, mentally strong enough to stand up to the sorcery and psychic powers that were employed against them. However, the Emperor was always at their head, so they didn't need a structure that made them stay loyal without him nearby - note that Ghota's loyalty is to his leader more than his 'brother', and to themselves over 'humanity'. They only needed to last long enough to conquer a planet - so they age and their genetic alteration eventually becomes cancerous. Also, they mention how they escaped 'the cull' which happened upon achieving unity - that the Emperor deliberately killed them off when he had no more need for them.

Actually this phrase as whole is borrowed and well-known, so now it's even in Merriam-Webster Dicitionary .
So nope, this is just current English
