I am just curious as to how this would work out for various armies and how different people would do it.

You play 4 games, at escalating levels, but have to keep the ENTIRE previous level. You can add to units at the next point level but can NEVER take away.

for example:

game 1: 1000pts
Game 2: 1250 pts - You have to have your entire original 1000pt list included and then add 250pts
Game 3: 1500pts - Your entire 1250 and another 250
Game 4: 1750 - Your entire 1500 and another 250.

Let's post some lists, your army or not and see. This is just a curiousity a couple of us have of how it would go.... how different armies would be better at certain levels, etc, etc. We're doing this on our blog (see my sig!) in preparation for a tournament early next year we are hosting.

This is how I build my army in an escalation league.

1. Start out with the basics - the troops. I try to get at least 3 troop choices in at 1K. 4 at 1.5K and 5 at 2K. I think balance and scoring units is key to a successful army as 2/3 of mission objectives are objectives-based. Your troops don't have to be maximized or expensive. As a matter of fact, I usually take min-sized troop choices mainly for objectives. My offense then comes mainly from my Elite and Heavy choices.

2. Make sure you have some type of anti-tank (AT) in your army. This would normally take up the heavy/elite slots, but some armies have troops that can do AT as well.

3. Mobility. At lower points games, it's not as high a priority, but as you scale up, you need to be able to move better.

4. Make sure you have some type of anti-infantry in your army. This is usually tied into your troop choices, as few people nowadays need specialized anti-infantry firepower, though that really depends on your local meta, or what people normally run in your local area.

5. Rinse and repeat. As you go up in points, add more to 1, 2, 3 and 4 and usually in that order.

Let's take for example, my Grey Knights. I run Purifier grey knights. This is how my lists look like:

Grey Knights 1000

That is what I meant about my list not being terribly refined
