Hi all, I'm about to start painting what I hope to be a bronze statue, any advice on what colors to use?

Dwarf bronze as a basecoat, lots of vallejo sepia ink (undiluted!) on top of it, and then shining gold for highlights?

Dude I'd highly suggesting using Vallejo Model Color (VMC) paints. They have fantastic metallics! ...check out my blog article on GOLD (I breakdown all of the popular brands): http://atticwars40k.blogspot.com/2011/10/great-gold-rush-quest-for-best-gold.html

If you are airbrushing the Vallejo Liquid Gold is another great option, though VMC is still very nice in an airbrush.

You better! I just bought the stuff but haven't had a chance to use it on anything yet. Need to get some alcohol to thin and clean brushes with.

I just read an article in a rather ancient White Dwarf, they started with a Jade Green basecoat, followed by Tin Bitz (now discontinued but Vallejo has an equivalent) then a light drybrush of Shining Gold.

That sounds familiar, actually. I've never tried it, but it's probably worth a go.

I should make some statues for scenery.

Bronze with or without the patina?

I find that the "basecoat Boltgun Metal - highlight Chainmail - highlight Mithril Silver" combo washed with several layers of 50/50 Gryphonne Sepia and Devlan Mud makes nice aged bronze.

Nice Article, I'll likely refer back to it when I get up to doing my own Sanguinary Guard - Just one question though - With VMC2 (I don't have an airbrush) what exactly are you doing with the Scrofulous Brown after the basecoat of VMC brass?
Have you tried using the Vallejo Model Air range of metallics?

Scipio thanks man ...I used the brown in my brass mix for the basecoating. It was a "4 to 1 ratio" Brass to Brown. You don't need an airbrush though, those paints went on very nicely regardless.

Regarding the Vallejo Liquid Gold - I am trying to get an article together on my blog but I will say this for now... just use the paint 'as is' with a few drops of Isopropyl Alcohol (91%). It works nicely, but the cleanup is a rather headache. If I wasn't doing terrain I would have been better off using a standard brush likely.

The problem with real bronze is that it's really quite a dark, dull brown colour.
I would paint the area tin bitz then wash with black.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

They discontiniued Tin Bitz? That slipped under the radar, how will people paint Uruk-hai armour and ork machinery now? Oh the horror...
A mixture of gold and scorched brown should do it.. maybe.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470014a&prodId=prod930006a

Perhaps it's been discontinued in the states due to their random product laws, but it's alive and well in the UK.

EDIT: I just checked and it's there for the US, UK and Australian markets, so I guess CrimsonPrime must be talking about another of their metallics, maybe Brazen Brass or Beaten Copper.

I normally use the Gw "Dwarven Bronze" followed by a wash in either "Gryphonne Sepia" or "Devlan Mud," depending on how I want it to go. Highlight with "Dwarven Bronze" or "Boltgun Metal" if it tickles your fancy, also dependent on situation.

Here's about the best example of how my bronze turns out:
