I really want a tank legion for imperial guard and i've looked up on this website (http://www.build-40k.com/warhammer-40000-armies/) and i wanted to know if people would mind versing an army made of tanks that are cardboard or plasticard sorta thing? i'm really considering this as this a cheap/almost free option to having a tank army.

Not if they are well built. They are just scratchbuilds like any other.

Crap. Sorry. No, in fact I would love to verse such an army. Much more interesting.

I concur, they would have to look like a good amount of effort was made and not just "this shoebox is a baneblade, and this box is a leman russ".

I too agree, if they are done up right. I m not a fan of " this soup can sprayed with primer is my dreadnought" sort of thing.

I build alot of card/paper vehicles myself so I wouldn't have an issue w/ it so long as I could see a decent amount of effort was put into it.

You can see a warhound titan on the right, that's a scratchbuild out of cereal box card & pvc piping. I've never had anyone complain about it, quite the opposite, I've gotten tons of compliments about it being scratchbuilt.

I also have a pair of scratchbuilt razorbacks & a dreadnought drop pod in my space wolves & a damocles rhino (clouseau pattern) & deathstorm drop pod in my Imperial Fists. I'm working on a MKI/II hybrid land raider for my Iron Warriors made from cereal box card as well. I've actually found that if you put enough work into them, some people really enjoy seeing them on the table.

But. Don't try this at a GW store unless it's a scratchbuild of your own design such as the ragnaroks I'm building for my Iron Warriors apoc army.

Rule of Cool. GW stores might be a hard sell, since they have rules set down by the corporate office, but for pretty much any other play, the Rule of Cool is in effect - the better they look, the fewer people will mind. An awesome scratchbuild, whether of a prohibitively expensive (FW titan), custom, or unavailable model, always earns respect. Half-assed scratchbuilds of available models are borderline disrespectful to fellow players. Either play within your financial means or put in some serious effort and you'll be fine. Make them good enough and you'll get accolades, on top of acceptance.

If they look really like the GW models, then even a GW staffer might let them pass.

Otherwise, there's good papercraft and bad papercraft - and I've seen examples of both along the way.

Do a good job and I'll play against you.
Do a bad one and you can play against that guy with the power rangers toy as his titan.

I wouldn't mind playing against decently made ones. I might mind playing if you used the word "versing" though.

I would have no problem at all playing againsted scratch built anything as long as it looks like you put some effort into it.


Like oadie said " Rule of Cool" the more effort and better it looks the less people will bitch about it.


I have a half finished Warhound made out of plastic card. It's a fun project but I am just not that into 40k anymore. But even I have put rivets and pistons on it. I have also put a bunch of techie 'do-hickies' just to make it look that much better. =o] Just put some effort into it and post pictures of your project logs please. I love reading and looking at people scratch-building stuff.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, i'm going to make it as best as i possibly can and will improve in skill as i do it, i tried building the leman russ and just couldn't build the sides because i couldn't get my fingers in to make it stick to the tab and stuff, so i'll try a more basic design first like a sentinel.
