I personally love the idea of this - I'm doing a feral orks army using Codex: Orks, A Legio Cybernetica army using Codex: Necrons, Adeptus Custodes using Codex: Grey Knights, Kroot Renegades using Codex: Tau Empire you get the idea.
Does anyone out there play a counts army?
As well, my friend thinks that playing a counts as army gives me an unfair advantage blah blah blah - do you agree?

On moon miranda.

How on earth does playing a counts as give you an unfair advantage, if the list is legal what difference does it make how the models look? How is modeling Paladins as Custodes giving anything an unfair advantage?

The only time its really cheeky is when it's done as a codex hop, such as what we saw with Space Wolves (where at the last Adepticon, SW's were the most popular army present and nearly 90% were codex hoppers) where one just uses a different, more powerful list with an otherwise existing army because the newer list is better. Again though, all its violating is the spirit of things, playing against such armies is no different than playing against perfectly modeled and painted equivalents.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

He reckons that I could change what a unit is half way through a game to my advantage - thats all

I don't think anyone would complain about it if the tournament mentality wasn't so zealous.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)
Adepticon 2011- Combat Patrol Best General

I'd like to see more of it - My Traitor guard use the Guard codex but with spikes and name changes. No more "unfair" than using normal IG.

I enjoy the fact that my army is different from everyone else and people stop and watch my games. Converting is always fun too

Give him a list that indicates what unit is what. That should shut him up

As long as everything is easily distinguishable I don't care. I have played againt a guy that used bases with different coins to mark what kind of unit they are supposed to be.

As long as someone doesn't model for advantage, and everything is explained before the game starts, then I would zero problem. I'd say I'd enjoy playing against a unique army like that, more than the standard Ultramarines army.

Its fine to me, and would I would actually love to play against a creative army. Honestly, the difference is aesthetic, not any rules issues.

I agree. I have a pre-heresy NL army using the Codez: Blood Angels, as I think they potray them welll - fear, assault troops, mobility and of course, drugs (for the furious charge, FNP etc)

Fact of the Day: Emperor's Children are believed to be selling strange substances to children.

Thought for the day: Fear the Emperor or at least fear his Inquisition.

Lonely hearts column: Tall, thin metallic gentlemen with deep deep green eyes (in curvy hollow sockets) seeks well-oiled stainless steel female, must be soulless.

It's great - I have a couple in my sig.

The important thing is to make sure everyone can instantly tell what represents what, and that all the weapons are WYSIWYG.

The unfair advantage comes from people who DON'T do this in tournament situations. Suddently you have to remember what everything represents...

"What do you mean that guy is a counts-as Sgt with a powerfist? If I'd known that I would have targetted the unit earlier."
"Well, I did mention it two hours ago..."

If I did a counts-as army, I'd always keep a written 1 or 2 paragraph expanation with pictures of the models so my oppenent knows who's who.

I'm currently building a counts-as Blood Angels army.

Its not easy, but i'm spending a LOT of time making sure guys are WYSIWYG... check out blog in sig for details.

Counts as is fine, as long as you maintain WYSIWYG and your army looks good.

Play with pennies. I don't care.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.
