Jason also replaced the green rods (is that allowed? Apparently it is, we checked) with red ones. While the rods on the normal units were pretty easy to change, the Monolith proved to be particularly challenging and it took quite some time for Jason to create a translucent red crystal for the top of the mighty war machine. But he didn't stop there - it also has working LED's to make it light up.
Nothing indicates recasting and these spotlights are fan pieces (there are even pictures of non GW bits in some cases)

Well, nothing except 'replaced the green rods (is that allowed? Apparently it is, we checked) with red ones'. Unless GW started selling red Necron rods/portals/gems for the Monolith, they've been recast in another clear colour.
However, GW did once do an article about recasting small bits for yourself. And he's not selling them.

So selling 3/32" fluorescent rods is breaking the law?
Ok I'll give you the portal one I suppose, didnt see that bit until now. Though as you said as long as you're not selling them

We would also need to know whether or not he cast it or crafted it from scratch, and if the former whether or not he used GW's moulds, as with the light-up Balrog...

They both appear to be 1:1 recasts in red clear resin.
And it doesn't matter if it's personal use or sold, recasting is still illegal.

Also they have in the past told people to cast bitz for themselves in WD.
In Canada, it is even legal for me to recast my own GW/FW for personal use. Something I need to start doing...

Clearly?
You can't tell squat from that thumbnail apart from the colours (and even that is a simple job in CS.)
Prisms are easy to have made (especially one of that basic a shape). Hell, you can even VACFORM them out of acrylic sheet in a garage setup.

You can buy different colours of plastic rod on eBay. As for the crystal, well that looks like a solid casting because you can see airbubbles in the centre of the red crystal.

Really? Not to drag this thread off-topic, but I think this statement is incorrect... there is no law that I know of (in the U.S., anyway) that prevents recasting for personal use. Same with making a copy of a DVD/game, or recording it off TV... fine for personal use, NOT fine to sell.
And I think this is taking totally the wrong slant on the picture posted in the OP. Red is awesome! Now if he's just make rusted-scheme necrons, and say their power-rods or whatever are draining, their joints seizing up...

I have been casting for 10 years, My opinion it that the top is a beginner level cast (recast). I can see air bubbles in the piece, casting clear resin is very difficult to do without airbubbles. You can get the right size and shape pretty easily, but you need high end resins and a pressure pot and vacuum chamber to do it without bubbles. Most recasters won't or can't use those tools because of the costs.
Sum up, the monolith parts are very likely recast.

The recast components are sufficently simple and do not detract from the copyright owner's value that the copyright probably wouldn't be enforceable anyway.

theunicorn wrote:I think the air bubbles look ok in that pic as well, especially with the led lighting. I'm pretty sure the catalogue pictures of the Monolith use a solid casting of the crystal rather than the plastic one of the kit. Maybe this studio monolith is a prototype. I recall with the Monolith was first released, the crystal looks just uniform, perfect and solid, then I saw the kits people had made where the crystal is stuck together in two halves and looked pretty cheap. Compare the GW catalogue photo... http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m400728_99120110004_NecronMonolithMain_873x627.jpg with actual builds... http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/103/1/a/Necron_Monolith_by_PookeyW.jpg http://www.ifelix.net/gamingblog/wp-content/dsc00129.jpg

Could be considered a bit naughty though because, if I'm right, they are selling you something different to that pictured. Under UK law at least, that could be construed as misrepresentation of the product.
Rules on pictures of food have been tightened up in the last few decades (in the UK) so that now, photos actually have to use the contents of the package sold. Previously they had tricks like using mashed potato with food colouring to make displays for icecream advertising. Now they can't do that, they actually have to use the icecream. What they do with microwave meals is a work of art compared to the rubbish in the packet.

But every GW box says contents subject to change or may vary from pictures shown. Basic get out clause. If not they would need to be assembled and painted.

I speed probably 2-3 times a week, and jaywalk often. Those are also illegal. If you live in the States you probably have broken many laws that are not enforced. The laws that cover personal recasting probably wont ever be enforced on an individual here in the States because it is way too much hassle for law enforcement and judicial system compared any damages either actual or perceived by the IP holder. Now when you sell them then it MIGHT be worth the costs to enforce.
