So i'm trying to think of a way to make it look like my assault marines are about to land on the base.. like there dropping in.. any ideas?

Also was wondering if there was any effective way to make it look like the jump packs are still smoking from being used..

Have either of these things been done? if so, how? and if not, any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Ad "landing" - I'd mount them slightly above the base using some thicker brass rod (painted to blend with the rest of the base) inserted in the foot, so you achieve the effect of being above the ground.

Also, tilt them back slightly so as if using the thrust to slow the landing.

This would be very tricky to pull off, but if you could sculpt a pillar of "thrust" from the jetpacks to ground that could support them. Would be very hard to make it look realistic tho

Thanks for the input guys, would cotton balls be too weird looking for the exhaust?

have a look at armorcast http://armorcast.com/store/index.php?cPath=100&sort=4a&page=3 they make cinematic effects for models and these would work, they may be a tad large for marine packs but it's a start? there are also some smoke plumes further down the page that may be useful?

I'm planning something similar but I've been painting a glowing effect on the exhausts. Once I finally decide on a resin base I'm going to be pinning through the foot for those running to look as though they are landing in a running sprint.

My fear is the model will suffer from being top heavy or something similar

Also, woodland senics makes clump foliage in autmn colors, which could be stuck on brass rod and lightly sprayed black to represent gouts of fire and smoke http://media.photobucket.com/image/vehicle%20destroyed%20marker/schweetguy/RusBurn.jpg and on woodland senics websi\te: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/CF-FM/page/1

Thanks for the input guys!!

@Rogueeyes; I don't think it will be top heavy I mean unless its a metal model.. because if your using a brass rod to hold it up, it should be able to support a lot.. also helps if you weigh down the bases.

No problem, have you decided what you are going to do?

Well the stuff from armorcast looks cool and the scenics you posted also looks cool, leaning towards the woodlands scenic stuff though.. Also gonna pin the foot to the base with a brass rod to make it look raised.. shall be epic, thanks again all for the input.

don't use cotton, it does not respond the way you want it to.

You should use the synthetic stuff that fills pillows and stuffed animals.

If you put a wire into the jumppack, and ground it into the base, you can hide about 2/3 of it with exhaust flame and smoke. The rest of it could be hidden away using scenics on your base.

Just a tip toe of the marine touching the ground could be cool too, with a decent sized pin holding it in place.

More good ideas! Pinning to the jetpack does sound like a better idea. Thanks again Dakkaites!

This isn't 100% what you were thinking, but it at least gives you a visual to work w/:

These are my Iron Warriors Raptors. I built them to look like they're bounding/landing on various pieces of terrain, one's even landing on a downed loyalist whose chapter I haven't decided just yet.

Here's a guy I did a while back. You could do something similar, rather than a big plume perhaps have the figure flying past some debris (a pillar or lightpost etc) on his way down, attaching the smoke plume to that.

Looks cool, but seems like a little too much for my taste... anyway what kind of material did you use for the smoke plume?

With some careful positioning and not too much cutting, you can definitely make standard marines look like they're landing. Here's one of my Carrions of Khorne (raptors):
