Hello, I got my tank order on the way.
I was trying to search for resource for painting black tank like those for black Templar. However, I cannot find any on google.
Anyone have any tips or resource for painting black tank?
Thank

High lighting black is fairly simple. Build up from black to white, or another option is from black to blue.

Highlighting white can be a lot harder.

If you have an airbrush....Basecoat black, then do your fist highlight in Vallejo Black Grey, and the 2nd in Vallejo Medium Sea Grey.

I think the main problem with black is that you can easily make it look more of a dark grey if you over highlight, so just be careful

you want to avoid making it grey like op said but remember things are rarely truly black. If you paint the tank a very very dark grey then you can shade as well as highlight and it will still look black.

SM tanks are large and angular enough that natural lighting will actually do a bit of work for you. The most important thing is getting a bit of edge definition.

Surprisingly enough, one of the better black tanks I've seen was finished off with a white colored pencil, of all things. While it sounds like straight white highlights would be too stark (and, normally, they would be), the pencil allowed for such fine and controlled edgelining that the illusion of light was created without resorting to grays, at all, which would diminish the impact of the black. IIRC, there's a video tutorial on Youtube that showed the technique quite clearly.

Granted, this is far from a realistic way to paint. Painting to scale, blacks should become gray at distance. Using a range of deep grays allows the painter to create a false effect of scale and to manipulate the apparent finish of the black surface (matte vs. gloss). IMHO, though, the resulting "blacks" don't fit the feel of Black Templars quite as well as straight black.

Another trick is to use weathering to show edges - chipped paint and dust can be very effective.

I have a simple, kind of 'cheaty' method i love for black, it's pretty easy too, I'm at work so I'll just be brief, but if you want to know more just shoot me a PM. simply assemble your models, remove mould lines, undercoat chaos black spray, then apply a couple of bursts of skull white spray from above and to the front of the model, then if you are lucky enough to have an airbrush or GW spray gun apply badab black wash mixed with a small amount of acrylic thinners, apply another coat until you're happy with the shade, then using codex grey and/or fortress grey use the edge of your brush to give you an edge highlight on the sharp areas, this is how some of mine turned out.

hope it helps someone?
