I've got a BA army that I've been collecting since 2nd edition. It's all just block painted and the bases are plain painted goblin green. To improve it just a bit, I'm going to dip the figs and add some proper basing. to keep the 2nd edition vibe, I'd like to replicate the green-grass basing as seen in the 2nd edition rulebook. Kind of like these figs.

Are these flocked?
or..
Are they sand painted goblin green and highlighted? If so, what color for the highlight? Lighter gren? Bone?

During 2nd edition the bases were goblin green highlighted with a brush of something like snot green.

Bear in mind that the goblin green of this time was quite a different colour to that of 3rd edition onwards. It used to be more creamy an pale, after 3rd edition when they changes paint supplier it became a much more vivid green.

Doesn't look flocked. It looks like they did some kind of sand base and painted that green.

They just put a layer of fine sand on the base, painted it goblin green, then drybrushed with some lighter green i cant remember the name of and a final light highlight of sunburst yellow.

I can just about remember an article on this from when i got my very first gw figure a long time ago

IIRC it was goblin green then drybrush with sunburst yellow.

You could try getting a hold of the 'dyed sawdust' green flock they used to sell, I've got a big tub of the stuff sitting around (I use it as a texture component in mud basing because I hate the colour). It should be available in any model railway stockist...

This one is mine:

...It's textured with Silver Sand (used in fish tank filters, apparently, but perfect for modelling purposes as it is so fine grain), painted with Snot Green, and then highlighted with Goblin Green.

The Snot Green/Goblin Green combo was more or less the standard for 2nd edition, although GW's bases were generally edged with the Goblin Green rather than the Snot. I went with the darker colour on the edges myself because I thought it looked better.

Thanks Insaniak! That's just what I wanted to know.
I like the effect you got, and the grain of your sand looks very similar to the paint texture that I use for my basing. The current shade of the bases on my BA figs is somewhere between snot and goblin green.

One question though. Am I right in assuming that you are refering to the older gobling and snot green colors rather than the current versions of those colors?

I won't be using GW paints, but it'd be nice to know which swatches to bring when I head to the craft store.

Yeah, this was during the Coat D'Arms paint range era, not the current paints.

From memory, Scorpion Green is now closer to the old Goblin Green than the current Goblin Green is. It's slightly yellower, but not by much. I was using them both more or less interchangably for a while.

Snot Green hasn't changed a whole lot. Coat D'arms do still produce both of the original colours in their Fantasy range, though.
