I've not seen it mentioned so here it is Miniature Wargames recently published a special edition of their magazine(which does have a whole section covering fantasy/sci-fi each month) covering the two genres. It has features on Mantic, An army painter section as well as some really interesting scenarios for systems like Hammer's Slammers and even a giant ant scenario! I'm highlighting its release in the hope it can be a regular release as well as a true alternative to the partline that White Dwarf is nowadays!

Bought it, not bad but for me not enough pages to be a stand alone release as it was, I was hoping for something a bit more substantial. It does come with a sprue of Mantic ghouls if that sweetens the deal for anyone. It was good to see a mag in the newsagents that isn't loads of historical stuff. I know there's a huge market for it but all the civil war / medieval stuff kind of blurs into one for me

Hi Warmill,
They did the magazine as a sort of water tester to see what the reaction would be. I agree it could have been a bit more substantial but you must admit it was good to actually get a dedicated magazine for the genres we follow. They also would like feedback on it along with your suggestions, which I have forwarded myself. Personally I'd like to see a regular mag covering fantasy/sci-fi as it would be a great opportunity for manufacturers to get their stuff seen. The internet is good but sometimes we miss out on a lot of ranges unless they get mentioned on Dakka.

I got the issue, a bit too overpriced (had to pay €10,--) for my tastes and they call Dakka Dakka in an article "controversial" and having a "pack mentality" when Ramshackle Curtis posted his bear a few months ago. Anyway, too low on good content IMHO.

edit.

It did make me buy 7TV!

another edit.

The free sprue must be a UK only deal..

This thread about the armored bear... that got rave reviews on here?

Or the previous, non-armored version, that people didn't like as much?

Couldn't agree more, I was going into my local WH Smiths every day for a week and a half looking for it! Personally I'd love to see some of the content that used to be in WD / Citadel Journal, conversion guides, how to build scenery, maybe a tale of 4 gamers sort of feature (loved that back in the day) with some people building armies for a game system they've not played before. Good start though, and I did enjoy seeing some new sci-fi stuff. I hope it does become a regular feature, I'd buy it.

The first one.

"And Finally. Back in July, I'm told. Ramshackle Games (www.ramshacklegames.co.uk) posted pictures of their new 'bear' on controversial website Dakkadakka. The 'pack' mentality reared its ugly head and it was universally panned as being nothing remotely like a 'bear' - more like an outsized badger." Article then goes on to say that the new armoured bear was posted up and how we embraced it.

Well, for what it's worth, the first pic I found when googling for the non-armored version was on another forum where They were panning it... the armored version really is much better!

I bouoght a copy - paper fantasy/sci-fi gaming magazines are rarer than hens' teeth, so need supporting.

That said, they'll have to do a lot better if they want to grow this idea. The Ancible is a better read, and has *much* better painting quality in its photographs. That latter is my main beef: their standards of painting are about 25 years behind the times and are rather poor, it has to be said, and I'm not really a painting snob!

Mind you, MW's painting standards have always been pretty poor, and amongst the historicals crowd are a bit of a standing joke. If you buy a magazine for the pretty pictures then you'd perhaps better look elsewhere. If on the other hand you want a few good articles to read, then they are more rewarding.

Cheers

Thanks for the tip, saved wasting my time and money, I mean reading that sounds like a young kid moaning his mama didn't give him a lollypop...

I don't even know that there is a real "need" for a Sci-Fi / Fantasy specific magazine.

With websites like Beasts of War, Tabletopgaming news, Coolminiornot and others, I really don't recognise a need to kill more trees.

Alot of people are either not bothered about the world outside of WH40K / Fantasy, and those precious few that are, either play historicals or have found what they're looking for and are content. For all the other noise / news, those previously mentioned websites pretty much cover it.

The only miniatures magazine I buy now is Figure International, which is a great collectors magazine, but really biased towards 54mm and upwards. This, to me, is a genre worth immortalising in print, as the longevity of the pieces is really quite substantial....unlike most Sci Fi games and their by-products.

Once you take White Dwarf and the PP magazine out of the equation, is there even enough Sci Fi / Fantasy "news" to fill a six page article?

Man down, Man down....

The thing that annoys me the most is that the article author just says "I'm told" and works on it from there. But bleh, that's not the reason I'm not buying this mag another time. The high price does it in for me and the way they run their ads. The magazine relies on ads a lot, so much so that they interrupt articles to run a full page ad. Wargames Illustrated has a lot of ads, but at least they have the common sense to put the ads in between the different articles, Miniature Wargames interrupts articles with ads quite a bit, which makes for a jarring reading experience, especially when trying to read up on those Giant Ant scenario rules. At first I thought that they had misprint it and forgot about the rest of it, but if you ignore the full page ad and flip a page, you get the rest of the article.

So no, pass from me. Paying €10,-- for a mag that has been around as long as me and can't edit things properly is a no-go.

Someone not liking dakka filled his hears with crap and we have to pay 10 euros to see him fall flat on that pool of nonsense? Talk about clueless people writing in mags, the least they could do is be a little informed.
