It's about the cities of the world setting themselves up on giant tank treads and rolling around the wasteland eating each other. Best LOLWUT premise for a story I've ever read.

That book is really depressing.
Highly recommended.
There's also Children of Men (yep, was a book first) and Stephen King's
The Stand.
Neither of which matches The Road in sadness.

Patriots by Rawles is very good.
One Second After by Forstchen is fantastic.
Neither probably fit into the SciFi genre but the both deal with the collapse of society as we know it present day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalyptic_and_post-apocalyptic_fiction might be a good place to start.
A few I can recommend (kind of geared towards younger readers, but excellent books nonetheless):
The Transall Saga (A great read, it actually has kind of a sad ending)
The White Fox Chronicles
The City of Ember (The Prophet of Yonwood, the third book in the series, is excellent)

Second SM Stirling's Emberverse. Starts with Dies The Fire. It's probably one of my favorites for society breaking down. The first three have almost no fantasy element to them with the exception of the event that causes the apocalypse. The series focusing on the kids from book 4+ is also excellent but a little more fantasy flavored.
Also an interesting read of a partial collapse of society due to climate change and disease is John Ringo's "The Last Centurion" is pretty good. It's a stand alone.
The Jerusalem Man Series (or John Shannow) by David Gemmel is good (ignore the first two, they are fantasy and not post apoc).
If I think of any other's I'll put them up.

Do your book shops not have a specific section for the post apocalyptic genre within your fantasy and sci-fi section?

Definitely +1 on this, although I have to be honest I'm not sure if I would recommend The Road - it was so utterly, soul-crushingly depressing, and at times I found it to be rather pretentious in this regard.
Farnham's Freehold by Robert Heinlein is a good one, as is The Postman by David Brinner ( much better than the film, hopefully you won't have seen the film recently and so won't associate the main character with Kevin Costner )

I had forgotten about this one. I was having trouble finding the Prophet of Yonwood. Thanks for reminding me!
One that probably doesn't even count is The Salvation War, which is about God closing the pearly gates and humanity fighting desperately against the hordes of demons that come to Earth afterwords.

"I Am Legend".
Seriously. It's a fantastic read, Richard Matheson is responsible for many of the greatest of the original "Twilight Zone" episodes and it shows in his writings as well.
