There is a tournament next year at 3000pts, and one of the big rules is that you may have any of your characters ride a monster. The monster can be from any army book, and doesn't have to be a mount (may use a giant, treeman or Hydra for example).

I have an Empire army, what would be a good combo to use? I am considering a cheap captain riding a Hydra, simply to access the Hydra itself. Anyone have any ideas on what to use for Empire?

I think you got a few options.

a) nothing. Because sticking your champ in units is still usually better for everyone UNLESS the monster is free or heavily discounted.
b) Stonehorn. If you get to use the Beast Rider rule. And because it can half incoming shots.
c) A fricken Daemon Lord. Because when they try and shoot you with a cannon, you're sitting on Khairos-gdamn-Fateweaver's Hello Kitty backpack and you can laugh it off. A Bloodthirster would be almost as silly. But really, it's because of their combination of Ward saves/flying/powers/T/W and everything else. I don't think any other monster comes remotely close, which is why they can't be mounts.

I'd personally spam wraiths on giant squigs, just for the stupidity of the rules.

For empire, an Engine of the Gods steggadon ancient would be nice. Just be sure to dig out those old pizzaro models as crew.

I don't know Giant Squig, but fer serious even a naked Daemon Lord is 450pts and rock solid.

The Engine of the Gods idea is a good one too.

Hellpit Abomination? I mean, who doesn't want a mount that has a chance of getting back on its feet!

Granted, the compulsory movement might be an issue...

I think this tournament is going to be insanely unbalanced, but alot of fun at the same time. Although it could be very bland as people are going to all want the same or similer monsters.


I think some of the Storm of Magic monsters would be a good idea.

a Cockatrice or Thundertusk would be an interesting choice.

Sounds like a neat idea for an event, as long as they tweak the rules for the next one once people figure out how to break this

I would've gone for a Stonehorn as well, but there are a ton of good options!
