I'm hoping to start playing WHFB and looking at the armies, i was wondering what you guys think would be a good army to start with? I'm also hoping to just stick to the one army with fantasy after jumping between armies in 40k. Any helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Personally I was thinking High Elves, because I like their general aesthetics and also my friend has suggested purchasing the Island of Blood box set together, and he would have the Skaven.

I always try to keep this up to date with what projects I'm working on... but they just keep piling up

Where the sun crosses the field of blood.

There is only one good army to start with - That's the one you choose.
If you like th aesthetic of High Elves, think their style of playing seems decent or better, and think that the Island of Blood would be a great start, then I would say High Elves is a good army to start with for you.
It's really individual, you know.

All fantasy armies are different. There are two articles, one that gives a quick break-down of the difference armies, and one that gives a break-down on the rough "tier" of the armies (both of which are subject to debate of course), that if you could find would be good starters.

Overall though it depends on what style you want to play. Roughly speaking high elves are a finesse elite army. You're gonna be out-numbered, especially by skaven, but you're guys will be better then most on average. Tactics will be at a premium.

Just about all the different armies are good on the table, except for Wood Elves, so its really down to personal preference which you go with.

Some are harder to use then others however.

High Elves are a tougher army to get good with. Their core troops are really fragile and have low damage output. They have some really good combat troops, but if they arn't careful they can really fall apart quick.

They really rely on magic to make the army work. They need those buffs and debuffs working because elf infantry just can't stand up to most other armies on an even footing.

Many units are also overcosted for what they do and as such an army may find that a sizable chunk isn't pulling its own weight. Namely Bolt Throwers are the main problem here. The issue is that HE have no other shooting for taking down big monsters(besides magic of course) so you are kinda stuck.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
