Well here is a bit of background. I am just about to get into warhammer 40k (am yet to buy a single model) and will be on my wife's bad side for starting a new hobby, so I will likely only be building a single army. The LGS that I will be playing at with friends has been running and supporting 40k for quite a long time and most the games there are considered friendly but everyone has been playing so long there very competitive at the same time. So looking for help on my first Blood Angel list to get started into the game and to hopefully be holding my own sometime in the next 6 months. So here is the beta list with help from a friend of mine who has played for about a yearish or so.

Meant to be an all comers list with the desire to be competitive enough to play in local tournaments.

1850

HQ's:
Mephiston 250
Librarian 100

Elites:
Sanguinary Priest (+jump pack, and infernus pistol) 90
assigned to a 10 man assault squad

Terminator Assault Squad (5 man)
1xLightning Claws, 3x Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Sergeant has double Claws
In a Land Raider Crusader
Extra Armor, Multi Melta, 2xHurricane Bolter, Twin Link Assault Canon, Hunter Killer 500

Troops:
10 man assault squad (2x Melta), Sergeant has Power Fist 235
10 man assault squad (2x Melta), Sergeant has Power Fist 235

5 man Assault Squad (Minus Jump Packs, 1xMelta
In a Razoback with Hunter Killer, Lascannon Twin Link Plasma 175

5 man Assault Squad (Minus Jump Packs, 1xMelta
In a Razoback with Hunter Killer, Lascannon Twin Link Plasma 175

Please feel free to tear into this list and tell me whats good and what isnt. Please dont hold back anything cause I am totally new, would love to know whats good and what isnt and why.

Thanks alot and looking to hear your thoughts.

Hi Redknight, welcome to WH40k and the Dakka Dakka forums! Unfortunately I myself can't advise you too much on your list because I don't play BA, I play GK for MEQ, but it seems like your friend knew how to construct a solid list. You have a good mix of units here, transports where you need em and a good amount of balance.

But...you may want to take a moment to consider jumping into this headfirst. One of the fun things I find about 40k is gradually building your armies. Not only does this allow you to experiment with different tactics to see what you like, but it lets you assemble and paint your army in steps. In your case here, you are just going and picking out models someone is telling you will win you games with them. If that is your main goal, best of luck to you. If you want more than that, you just might develop a closer attachment to your army if you take the time to figure out what each unit itself does, study its fluff and see if it looks cool to you! If not, you might be playing against some other type of army one day and say to yourself "Wow, those models look great, that army uses tactics I like way more, I wish I was playing with them and not these boring Blood Angels!"

Not that you can't have several armies mind you...

Anyways, it's not a bad thing to go out and drop a wad of cash on a bunch of models, paint, brushes, glue, and supplies (for GW at least). I see this all the time at my LGS though. Some guy wants to get into the gaming at the store, drops almost a g-note on stuff, and then comes back disapointed or not at all.

I'm not saying you're THAT GUY, but I think you may want to ease your way into the game, with a few smaller matches of 500-1000 points. That is just my two cents, but I hope you get into 40k, enjoy it, and impress your wife with the might of the Emperor's Angels of Death!

Heya Reckoner thanks for the input man. I am not going to be jumping in head first with a large wad of cash but going to be buying a solo or squad every few weeks at a time for quite some time. But I wont have the luxury of buying Lots of fun stuff to experiment with cause I am already gonna be on my wifes bad side for picking up a new hobby so want to have a good idea of a list before buying units, HQ's, and such. I hate getting into games and buying things that look great on paper to a noob and having them end up on a shelf never touched again cause well they just arent very good.

Ahh, gotcha. Well in that case, I think the list you posted is something to work towards. You probably don't need things like Mephiston or a Land Raider right away then. Instead, get what you would pick first in the basic force-organization chart. 1 HQ, 2 Troops, and then find an Elite, Fast Attack, or Heavy Choice you like.

The necessities then I think would be

-Librarian
-2 Assault squads with Razorbacks
-Troop/Elite/Fast/Heavy choice

How you follow that is up to you.

Anyone have any real advice for this list at all or is it just fine as is? Would love have someone fix what they think is wrong for me and tell me why.

You may want to include a dreadnought.

The concentrated force they bring to the table can be just what you need to take out that unit mopping up your forces.

Plus they're bitchin and immune to lasguns.

As no one seems to be volunteering answers I shall throw my hat in.

In general mixing jump packs and tanks is hard to balance. With this list in particular you want so much armour that the landraider is covered and antitank shots are diluted.

If you really feel the need for jump packs maybe just have 4 meltas in an honour guard just as a small assassin squad.
Otherwise just take razorback squads instead of the jump pack squads.

Happy Wargamming, Fletch.
