TOTAL - 1727pts

I've got 123pts to go and I need advice on what to spend it on - I was considering Wolf Scouts or a Lone Wolf, or dropping something to get enough points for a Land Raider Redeemer for Ragnar and his squad. I play a very aggressive game, so try to keep that in mind if you have any suggestions - I prefer not to stand back and shoot. It should also be noted that I don't have any more Missile Long Fangs (hence the Plasma Fangs), and the only other Transport I could take is a HB Razorback (borrowed from my brother), assuming I don't buy anything else... that said, I'd rather not buy anything else. If you want to know all the models I have access to, click the link to my Great Company in my sig.

Anyway, the plan is to aggressively charge the enemy lines. The Lascannon Razorback will camp objectives, the Assault Cannon Razorback will plod up to any mid-field objectives or act as a firebase in a Kill Team mission. The Rhinos will drive up to the enemy's lines and then disembark and attack. 1 will have Ragnar, the other will have a Rune Priest with Murderous Hurricane. The Long Fangs will line up and fire (one of these will have a LL Priest).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
After a tiny bit of thought, I'm considering dropping the plasma fang squad and then buying a Land Raider Redeemer with a Multi-melta and Extra-armour. That'd leave me with 18 points to spend on another Grey Hunter in all likelihood. A third option I'm considering is taking the Land Raider route and then dropping Ragnar and the extra armour in favour of Logan. I'd lose my ability to sweeping advance, but Logan's more flexible and a tank in his own right (I've been running him solo lately and he always wrecks everything in his path, and takes a ton of fire standing).

I recommend a 5th heavy weapon in the second squad.

Looks pretty good. I would definitely try to get a Wolf Standard in with all of your GH squads, especially if you're running Ragnar (you can even re-roll his War Howl).

I agree that getting a Land Raider would probably be a good idea. Ragnar hopping out of a Rhino is way less scary.

Rune priests are more or less the best HQ choice we have, but you might also want to consider a Wolf Priest. Stick a Wolf Priest, Ragnar Blackmane, and 10 Grey Hunters in a Land Raider and that should tear through anything in the game...upwards of 64 attacks rerolling to hit, rerolling 1's to wound, str 5 and 6, initiave 5 and 6, 14 of those attacks ignore armor. Make your own Deathstar with basic troops

Ooh that's an interesting idea - I think I'll write up a couple alternate versions of my list, but to fund a Wolf Priest I'd drop a couple of the Wolf Guard from the Razorbacks, maybe do some MSU shenanigans... I'll write up a couple alternate lists to ponder in any case.

Ragnar is an absolute waste in this list. Unless he's in a Land Raider with a full Grey Hunter pack then his points are being wasted because he cannot disembark and then assault, which is all he is good for. As another poster suggested, adding a Land Raider would be wise, but I don't think the Wolf Priest is really necessary. A Wolf Standard provides you with the ability to reroll ALL 1's in combat, and a Wolf Priest just makes them take Fearless saves if they lose.

Personally though I have never gotten a Ragnar list to function how I like it below 2,000 points, and have usually gone for Arjac instead, but the best I've come up with is the following:

Ragnar - 240
Rune Priest (Powers) - 100
4 Wolf Guard (2x Power Fist, 4x Combi-Melta) - 129
10 Grey Hunters (2x Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Power Weapon) - 195
8 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 170
5 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Razorback w/ TL Las) - 155
5 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Razorback w/ TL Las) - 155
6 Long Fangs (5 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ TL Las) - 215
6 Long Fangs (5 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ TL Las) - 215
Land Raider Crusader (Multi-Melta, Extra Armor) - 275
Total 1,849

This list has plenty of ranged power to cover your advance, but the main issue I run into with it is if you go 2nd your opponent immobilizes or destroys the Land Raider in your backfield before you can pop smoke to give it cover. With reasonably mobile firepower or good positioning it's not hard for your opponent to thread the needle and deny you cover, and most of the threat of this list is tied up in that one AV14 vehicle. It's the obvious target and you can expect it to be blasted straight away. Arjac has roughly the same problem, but he is a bit cheaper than Ragnar and the unit is not anywhere near as threatening with Arjac in it so usually firepower is spread out across the list a little more evenly if your opponent goes first. Also, Melta-Vets in Vendettas absolutely murder this list.

Regardless, it's the best combo I've been able to find so far and it works relatively well if you get the first turn or are going up against an opponent that doesn't have massive alpha-strike potential into your deployment zone. It will likely do well enough against Necrons if you avoid Scarabs with your Land Raider (or charge them with Ragnars unit before they charge you), but the weak matchups will be Imperial Guard and potentially Blood Angels.

Hope that helps!

Ok I've written up a new list. The only thing I'm thinking about changing on this one is dropping something to get another Lasback for the 2nd Long Fang squad... of course, then I'd have to go out and buy one. Also, I don't have any more meltagun models so I can't get another one for the 10x Grey Hunter unit without ditching one elsewhere.

HQ
Ragnar Blackmane (240pts)
Rune Priest - Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane (100pts)

Elites
3x Wolf Guard - Combi-Melta, Power Fist (43pts each)
1x Wolf Guard - Combi-Melta, Power Weapon (33pts)

Troops
5x Grey Hunters - Meltagun (80pts)
Razorback - Twin-linked Lascannon (75pts)

7x Grey Hunters - Meltagun (110pts)
Rhino (35pts)

8x Grey Hunters - Meltagun, Mark of the Wulfen, Power Weapon, Wolf Standard (165pts)
Rhino (35pts)

10x Grey Hunters - Meltagun, Mark of the Wulfen, Power Weapon, Wolf Standard (195pts)

Heavy Support
Land Raider Redeemer - Extra Armour, Multimelta (265pts)

Long Fangs Pack - 1x Squad Leader, 2x Lascannon, 3x Missile Launcher (170pts)
Razorback - Twin-Linked Lascannon (75pts)

Long Fangs Pack - 1x Squad Leader, 5x Missile Launcher (140pts)

I would never spend points on power weapons in GH units, especially if you're using Motw. I'm assuming you're attaching WGs with PF anyway.

The 10 man GH gets a free special weapon, so take one for free.

Also really add wolf standard to all your units.
