So im just this month starting my first ever warhammer army and I need some Chaos Obliterators that I plan to make out of some Possessed CSM and Chaos Terminators but I have never done any sort of modelling or sculpting (apart from 10x Khorne Bezerkerz that ive glued together and painted) so should i start straight up with green stuff or would simple proxying be better until I have some practice?

Well, it depends on what your converting and how good your skills are to begin with. When I first started my Nurgle army about 3/4 years ago when I was new to the hobby, I got the hang of using green stuff straight away. I would say you are better off getting a box of space marine devistators and chaos terminators, because the oblits morph/grow heavy weapons out of their arms. I personally think you should just dive in and start using greenstuff just like what I did, because practice makes perfect! Google Terminator obliterators for visual ideas. Hope my post helps you

Im starting off with a battlebox and about $150+ of varying bits of got off of ebay so i think ive got the right amount of parts to make a fairly decent conversion and thank you stupidly of myself I never though to google terminator obliterators and I was able to add quite a few more example pics to my folder

Most of my first conversions didn't even use greenstuff. I was just sure to use bits with good flat sides that I could glue regularly. Barrel swaps, adding scopes, things like that. No greenstuff required.
Start like that and move up. Greenstuff isn't that hard though.

Pratice makes perfect. Work your way up from simple stuff first, and youll get better and better.
Make sure you buy some good tools as well, and vasaline or something for the greenstuff as well.

Converting can be as hard as you want to make it really.
To start off for your Obliterators, plan each one, then use blu tac to create decent mock ups, before you crack open the glue.
I would wholeheartedly recommend picking up a pot of GW's new liquid greenstuff. I was dubious myself at first, but it really does come in handy when you're just doing gap filling, and where blobs of putty might be clumsy/difficult to work in with.
Cheers

Jollydevil wrote:Pratice makes perfect. This. Im a relatively new player, and my progress is admittedly very slow, but my love is converting. What ive learnt is take some Blu-tack, all the pieces of your model, and practice and work out the pose and bits you want. i always pre-pose my models before glueing them. it gives you a good idea of what the final thing will look like, and how it will work. Personally, I wouldnt jump straight into complicated GS models, but theres nothing stopping you from remaking the model when your skills are better. So i say go for it. What ive found is a GREAT resource if you are planning a conversion, is the Dakka Gallery and CMoN, I have a file with about 100 pictures from both sites (with artist credit on many of them) and i sometimes dip into those pictures for inspiration for my conversions and painting. It helps me get a good idea for what i want the final goal to be on my model.

If your looking for inspiation or help, the dakka gallery is a fantastic place to start. Just search greenstuff and you should find some sweet results. Remember to rate too

Oblits don't have to all look the same. i see them as terminators who've become especially obsessed with shooting and been 'blessed' by a chaos power with a mutation to make them even shootier. Their bodies have twisted and grown in some unpredictable way to let them carry more weaponry, and the weaponry itself may have become chaotic, e.g. a massive gun which constantly mutates.
Modelwise, you want something a little larger than a termy, with loads of weapons or one big mutated weapon.
- You could be lazy and just glue extra weapons on a normal chaos termy, and that's perfectly playable, but it won't look great. Especially if your army also includes normal termies.
- You can easily bulk up a termy body by inserting small discs of plasticard at the waist and shoulders. Depending on what's in your bits box, try to do something to further customise the torso, e.g. a bizarre head or some details covering the back vents.
- Decide on how you'll model the weapons before you do anything with the arms. E.g. i've seen nice oblits with no arms at all, just a n array of weapons mounted directly on their shoulders. I've also seen them carrying two-handed daemonic "multi-guns", or each hand holding a weird gun that's a combination of multiple heavy weapons.

Thank you everyone for the very helpful responses. So seeing as I will need some Plague marines and I have plenty of spare CSM they should provide some very good practice with the simple bloated and distorted flesh effects.

Well, what is your army so far? You need a legal army to play, you know, 1 HQ, 2 Troops. Anyways, on converting, it all depends on what the conversion is, how difficult it would be. I really don't know how you would make Obliterators with Possessed, seems kinda tough. Good luck, though.

HQ:
Daemon prince w/ MoN, Warptime, Wings - 175
Troops:
x8 Berzerkers, Champion, Power Fist, Rhino, TL bolter - 248
x7 Berzerkers, Champion, Power Fist, Rhino - 222
x7 Plague Marines, x2 Plasma Guns, Rhino, TL bolter - 231
Heavy Support:
x2 Obliterators - 150
x2 Obliterators - 150
x1 obliterators - 75
Total: 1251
Thats my army list that ive been workin on for a bit just for some friendly games to start with at my local GW and I plan on using the terminators bodies for their size and mainly the Possessed for the more demonic parts of their appendages.

Ah, good. So, you want to make even more Obliterators? You do have quite a few...

As of right now I only have my battleforce and tools which I bought locally, im still waiting on most of my other bits like the prince, terminators and various other bits that I bought off ebay for cheap. Plus ive been reading quite a few forums for the past couple weeks and the overall opinion ive picked up on is that obliterators are a must so im going to make as many as i can and just proxy terminators if i need them.

The only advise I would give is "sometimes less is more". I would look at the models you are trying to emulate and try to adopt the look. I have seen way too many over the top conversions that would have been way better with a little restraint. I am not a fan of the over the top Nurgle look some have created for example. Good luck and please post your models when you are done.

With a load of plastic kits and the nice new finecast, converting is easier than ever. Converting is easy. Converting well takes practice or a naturally creative ability. You should be able to look at a piece and see more than just what it is.
