Right, I'm contemplating starting a Black Templars force, and was wondering what is safe to get before the supposed new book comes out...what is most likely being re-done etc...and whether it is possible to do anything that is too expensive to buy through conversion etc, and whether it would be cheaper, thanks for any comments and help I get guys

Another urgent question on the BT front...how many marines can I make from the Upgrade kit?

Do I have enough to use it with a standard tactical box to make ten BT's?

Well we can assume that the marines won't change too much because BTs are regular marines with extra bitz. So I would assume that only minor details would change. I believe the upgrade kit comes with Tactical squad upgrades and maybe even rhino doors/hatches check GWs site, it should say on there

well depending how frugal you want to be with the templar sholder pads either 5-10 marines thats only with the pads there's enough to full convert 5 marines to templar

And still on the subject of BT...how would I go about painting the white shoulder pads? Would it be easier to spray white then do the black? :/

Spray it white then spray it black? geck you have an amazing spray can if you can do that. Just paint the whole thing in its black colours
once done, apply a light gray (aint got its name on hand atm) then apply whit eon top, with some of the greay visible in the corners. Or just paint it white. itll look alright, but will have to be layered.

Just get what looks awesome to you, if they are replaced with the new release you'll have to search ebay for them if you want them later.

You don't need to use every shoulder pad on each model: remember that the templar insignia is easy to paint on normal shoulder pads. So you can reserve those special shoulder pads on elite units and characters.

As for painting BT and their shoulder pads... enjoy:

Fair enough, and I meant spray it white then PAINT the black on the armour XD

But the idea of layering white on the grey sounds good. Would a 1:1 mix of Chaos black and codex grey work for extreme armour edge highlights on the black armour?

With the shoulder pads - also remember that you don't need to use two of them on each model, either. You can easily spread out the BT bits amongst 20 or so marines using the heads, arms, torsos, backpacks and shoulders - use a couple of bits on each marine and the box will go a long way.

I've also looked at the metal shoulder pads from GW and the forgeworld stuff...in your opinions are they worth it? :/

Never bought them. I am still in the opinion of one or two BT upgrade packs are more than worth it for an entire army.

The Forgeworld stuff isn't necessary by any means, but it's damned sweet. Metal shoulderpads - they are quite nice actually. Since you're in the UK you can get them for a decent price, so I would say if they look nice to you, go for it.

You can easily make 10 solid-looking templars out of the upgrade sprue, and you get rhino bitz on there as well (iirc you get 5 terminator shoulderpads as well but I'd have to check)

As for what's safe to buy - basic power armour dudes and vehicles. Rhinos and land raiders certainly aren't going to change.

Did you know? The Reach belongs to the Forsworn.

More than 5 terminator shoulder pads. You can also use them as slightly big power armor shoulder pads in a pinch for special characters.

I second ghost. If you want to make a Templar army grab a land raider tactical marines etc. and you don't have to assemble the them with shoulder pads if you think the update is coming soon.

If you have that much of an army you're planing I'd recommend buying it in blocks & building & painting each block before moving on to the next because it can get very daunting & overwhelming having that much laying around unbuilt just looming.

Yeah, I've had that problem with all my previous armies...hence why I get rid of them. My BT will be different
