I've been wondering if its acceptable to vote on your own images. Sure, giving your stuff a 10/10 rating IS idiotic and should not be done, but if you really think your image deserves a 7/10, 9/10, should you vote? What do you do? I have so far only rated one of my images, but it shows my brothers eldar, so I guess it doesnt count....

LOOK!! a shameless self-promotion! (gasp!)

Politicians are allowed to vote for themselves at election time and your opinion of your work is as valid as anyone else's.

I have not done this. It's not difficult to check as you can see who has voted by clicking on the vote number, it will list those users that have voted, including you if you have voted on your own models.

You'd be skewing the data you get back from the system so I'd say that I wouldn't but I don't necessarily see anything wrong with it.

Same as Luco. There is nothing wrong with it since your overall score doesn't really effect...anything. The whole point is to see what people think of it. I don't see how skewing your results with your own opinion helps you at all. You already KNOW what you think of it.

I don't think its wrong, but the whole point of the voting to me is to see how others view my work, so voting for yourself would in my eyes be pointless.

If it wasn't acceptable, then it wouldn't be allowed by the site admins.

This, basically. Gallery is for storage, sharing, and feedback. If I want to show how nice I think my own model is, it sits towards the front of my "painted" shelf.

riplikash wrote:There is nothing wrong with it since your overall score doesn't really effect...anything.
Almost - while there is no tangible prize, scores do have effects. For one, it throws off the gradient of quality when viewing gallery images by rating if a score has been inflated. One vote for your own image won't break the system, overall, but a bias-padded "bump" vote to get the minimum number necessary to display a score may result in a rather highly rated image of average or lower quality. More often than not, inflated scores are less a result of self-voting and more a result of what I would term "newb flocking" (tendency of threads by new and young hobbyists with understandably... basic paintjobs to be filled primarily not with advice and encouragement for experienced hobbyists, but an inordinate amount of praise for the finished quality of the work displayed by other new and young hobbyists), but it could contribute.

Inflated scores also devalue models that have received honest feedback from experienced painters (or experienced critics, even). The range of quality between various 5s or various 7s is astounding, and almost all of the outliers are low vote count images, meaning they're of the type more likely to be noticeably affected by a single vote. If NewPainterX gets 4 votes of '5' and gives himself a '10', he's looking at a '7'. What is NewPainterY to think about his work when he waits patiently for feedback and gets straight '5's, then looks at NPX's '7'?

Now, none of this is really all that important and most of it isn't even exclusive to the issue of self-voting, but it bears repeating, to my mind, since I haven't seen any discussion of gallery voting for some time. Do I vote for my own gallery pics? Nope. But I also don't consider the gallery a valid feedback tool, since I know that my mediocre images of decent (and no better) models won't likely get much traffic and will therefore likely have wildly skewed scores (supported by the fact that I've seen countless cases of two images of the same model in the same lighting from a slightly different angle receive scores as much as two points apart).

I would not. I'm more interested in the opinion of others. I already know what I think of it. If a model has 4 votes, it has 4 votes.

I do it, I try to be honest with myself though.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I agree with those who say there is no point on that. You already know which score would you give to that pic, you want to know what other people think. There is no need to modify the result to better suit you opinion, even if it is a minimal modification.

I voted for my own pics because I'd like at least one of them to get to 5 votes... Sure, I know my own opinion, but I'm not going to know anyone's if I'm stalled at 2-3 votes for weeks-months. (P.S. Thanks for voting on a couple of mine MrMerlin!)

As I've never seen one of my own pictures come up using the turbo voter I'm guessing that there's something in place to discourage self-voting. Of course you can go to your own page and vote for yourself, and if you are not logged in you can do so anonymously and repeatedly if you so wished.

Gallery voting is a funny thing, I try not to take too much stock in it. My half-eldar marine is currently rated 7.75 which is higher than most of my stuff. I painted him in a day yet the Dogs of War took weeks and I know the standard is higher.

I used to on my old stuff, nothing fancy mostly 4s or 5s. But I disabled votes on all of those when I stopped quite a while ago.
