In the Blood angels codex it says that blood champions have only power weps and combat shields. But the model has a bolt pistol! What's up with that? And if they do have pistols rules-wise, could they take upgrades?

Upgrading a model to a Blood Champion doesn't replace the weapons. A Blood Champion is armed with a Power Weapon, Combat Shield, Bolt Pistol (or Boltgun) and a Chainsword.

OK sweet thank you. Can they still take upgrades like a plasma pistol say?

No, only Veterans can take additional upgrades, the Blood Champion and Sanguinary Novitiate are not Veterans (obviously, they are in terms of fluff, but in terms of purchasing equipment, they are a distinct model type included within the Honour Guard unit).

Although some people may argue that you but them the equipment when there a veteran and then upgrade them to a blood champion. its the same with normal codex marines and there equivilant of a blood champion. try searching for company champions.

thanks for the links and all, but they don't really come to a conclusion. I'm going to ask the owner of my towns hobby center.

It really is unclear if they can take upgrades, for instance look at this thread where is was discussed.

The wording is ambiguous to say the least.

Ferocious Blood Claw

I think that he can still take upgrades based on the ork faq.

The FAQ, regarding upgrades for a nob, implies that upgrades are purchased in a specific order. Since this is, as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), not a codex: ork specific rule, it applies to other things.

Spoiler:
Q. If a Boyz mob exchange sluggas and choppas with
shootas, can a Nob take a power klaw or a big choppa?
(p100)
A. You may upgrade the Nob to have a big choppa or
power klaw before you choose to upgrade the mob to
have shootas, in which case the Nob is not affected by
the mob’s weapon swap (as he no longer has a choppa
to swap), does not receive a shoota and keeps his
slugga and power klaw/big choppa instead. He is a lot
happier that way!

Given that, there are no conditions on replacements in this circumstance as the new wargear is just added, not swapped out from previous wargear all you need to do is

1) replace Honour Guard A's bolt pistol with plasma pistol
2) upgrade Honour Guard A to a Blood Champion
3) ???
4) Profit.

The Ork FAQ is an exception. Its not a precedent to allow you to take upgrades in any order you wish.

Lol Ghaz this is like your cause. I saw your insanely long argument about this earlier. I have had people recommend I take blood champs with a meltagun or whatever as if there is no question, but I would tend to agree, it seems like they probably can't.

Thinking about it, you probably can buy the veteran gear and then upgrade him to be a blood champion, I don't see how this is really any different from say upgrading a librarian into an epistolary.
Personally though, I feel it would be bad form to do so.
