I got a can of Army Painter Necrotic Flesh primer a few weeks ago for my hordes of Mantic zombies, when I wanted to a few more (too many zombies) I couldn't find it anywhere on the site. I shot them an e-mail and this was the reply:

Hi BrookM,

Unfortunately so. We will re-release it in 2013 – but not that this info will help you very much right now...

Best regards,

Bo

So yeah.. gak outta luck until 2013 it is.

Yeah, makes you wonder what's going on. They had the cans up for a short time and pulled them almost immediately afterwards. I wonder, is my can lethal..

How lethal could it be? I mean it's not like its filled with Asbestos and liquefied plague victims or anything

OR IS IT??

You've already sent them one email, probably wouldn't hurt to send another to ask why. I'd mention the sudden lack of availability so soo after it's release as well, inquiring if there was a voluntary recall. Sometimes manufacturers will do this when there's a problem with a product, but not one so serious that it would cause health risks for users. i.e. the pigment to fixative ratio could be wonky or the sprayers in one or more batches may be damaged, causing mis-sprays.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

I've sent them an email asking if it is dangerous or if anything is seriously off about it. I doubt it, but it never hurts to check.

Yeah I suspect if there was something that made the product unsafe, they likely would have mentioned something about it. Or retailers of the product at least would have been alerted. Maybe something caused the formula to produce a product below there standards and it somehow passed QA and into production

They silently pulled it without any announcement as far as I know, you'd think they would warn their customers that one of their products is not up to set standards.

Ever seen Fight Club? There's a nice description of how many companies respond to faulty product that boils down to "if it costs more to recall a product than it does to pay off the expenses of consumers, then a recall is not performed".

If this is one of those cases, the manufacturer will usually want to get batch information about the product that you've purchased for quality assurance, but may not be forthcoming with compensation unless you experience an issue.

Maybe they just ran out, and there's limited capacity with their supplier so there's no 'slot' available until 2013?

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

It's only a theory... OTOH, hasn't Army Painter changed suppliers at least once in the last couple years? TO my understanding, most 'niche' spray paints (including Army Painter, GW, etc.) are basically rebranded custom colors from various big companies, right?

Wow, I remember having seen the paint up a little while ago and wanted to order a few cans, but I got screwed because it got pulled already. Thanks for the heads up as to why. I guess I'll be buying a case of rotting flesh paint pots instead.

I'm afraid you ruined the joke by adding 'quite literally' at the end.

Got a reply to my question if it is dangerous or not:

Yes, no problems at all – use away. Just make sure you read the instructions and/or have a look at the video on our website: http://www.thearmypainter.com/videogallery.php?videoid=1

Well, we try to Rotate the primers around a bit, so Retailers will not feel obliged to carry an enormous amount of different sprays at any one time.

Best regards,

Bo

Still.. strange that they pull a new spray that has been on market for just a few weeks. Oh well.

I found out the other day that Testor's Dullcote had been banned in the EU because it contained a certain chemical. As such, Testors are working on a reformulated version which should be coming out sometime soon.

Just a thought but I wonder if there is a correlation here (although I'm not sure where Army Painter are based?)

He can be quite volatile from time to time, requiring special handling, so yes, off to the shed.
