"Some Dark Eldar vehicles are fitted with several underslung chains and barbed hooks, the better to gouge at the flesh of those they pass over - if the vehicle happens to snatch up a victim or two and drag them to their death, so much the better. a vehicle with chain snares causes D3+1 S4 AP- Hits on all unengaged non vehicle enemy units that it passes over during the movement phase."

Does this mean every individual model or the entire squad? so if it goes over 10 models it has the chance to do 40 S4 hits? or if it goes over them it only does a maximum of 4 hits? Why can't gamesworkshop just specify this?

You roll once, and whatever unit you pass over gets hit that many times. Unit has a specific definition in the rules - so does models. They are not interchangeable and GW does not interchange them.

How is this not straightforward? It it meant D3+1 hits per model then it would say exactly that, it says UNIT so you do D3+1 hits for every unit you pass over. I completely fail to see how you could interpret this any other way unless you can't work out the difference between a unit and a model (which are both very clearly defined).

Unit = squad. See the rulebook, p3.

This tends to be confusing for some players, especially those with RTS gaming background where "unit" often refers to a single soldier. In 40k, the term "unit" always refers to an entire squad (which sometimes consists of a single model, such as most vehicles).

By context, and what most people read it as, is any unit (seperate squad) gets hit, not individual models.
