my treefarm is a brick of dirt and about 50 saplings underground lit by torches and it grows like weeds
if you look up and mine as tall as you can, the trees will grow 4 tall.

Only solid blocks can be pushed.
You could make a system that pushes ice into an area of light level 12+, thereby causing the ice to melt.
Might be difficult getting the ice in place, however.
Exactly. And then, how do you replace the block of ice once it has melted?

The issue with walls is we aren't sure if sticky pistons pull rows or just single blocks yet, if it is the former retractable walls over 1 high are possible but if it is the latter they aren't.
I know several techniques for making the walls erect themselves though.
