Ever since (more or less) finishing my Ork army that was the star of my somewhat dead blog I've had the hankering to get back to converting stuff up, eventually, armed with some Cadians, some Chaos Marauder Horsemen, greenstuff and my bitzbox, I decided to take up the challenge of... Khornate Renegade Guard!

OK, I realise the idea isn't overly original but it gives me plenty of scope for conversions.

So, the first thing I did was make a quick mock up in Photoshop to get an idea of a colour scheme I liked, eventually I settled on this:

And so after much building, kit-bashing and green-stuffing of the first batch of models (the results of which you shall see later) I selected one of the guardsmen to be the test for the scheme. Many, many hours later I have one whole completed guardsmen (well, mostly complete, the photo shows up a few things I need to fix).

Now I shall go and lie down and try to not think how many more of these guys I have to paint.

Ok, time to get this thing caught up with exactly where I am with this project.

First off, here's one of the few finished models, my counts-as Marbo, Guardsman Samson:

Now onto the sea of grey plastic... First up is my counts-as Strakken, his statline didn't seem to make much sense when he's not actually Strakken and so I tried to make someone in power armour that didn't instantly look like a marine. One arm is bare and one will be painted metallic to try and hammer home who's he's standing in for.

Here's my Master of Ordinance, not a particularly fluffy choice, I know, but dammit I wanted one! Anyway, the codex entry mentioned them using servo skulls so he's accompanied by a horned one who has picked up the name of 'Ted'.

My priests will be a sort of poor man's version of those by Ailaros, here's what I have so far, need some tweaking.

My rough riders will probably be the least converted units I'll be making, the only real thing most have is a pistol holstered, but they don't look too out of place next to the standard infantry (to me at least). The unpainted guys might be getting a few extra armour plates later today but mostly finished.

And finally onto the standard guardsmen, which my camera seemed to have contempt for and refused to take a single picture of without being incredibly orange. Anyway, these guys are in various states of completion.

And a solo pic of this guardsman because I finally managed to get a greenstuff arrow to work on his helmet.

Now you're all caught up I've no excuse to not get back to work.

Love the greenstuff arrow. Keep up the good work! Not enough Traitor Guard armies anyways.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD. Are you going to use the rules for guards and just include the marks of chaos as points are in Codex CSM?

@DreadlordME!: They'll just be ran as normal using the IG codex, taking elements from other books would likely confuse me just as much as my opponent.

@Capitansolstice: Gotta love 'em

@The Epic Chaosdude!!!: Good job that's one of the next things on my to-do list, then... provided I can figure out some sensible places to put them.

Instead of finishing the roughriders last night I decided to turn my attention to the priest. His eviscerator looked far to skinny and, to be honest, very obviously 2 chainswords glued together, so I set about trying to do something about that, here's what I came up with.

Basically all I did was bulk up the sides with plasticard and add a guard over his hand, I think it helps a lot with the whole 'very obviously 2 chainswords glued together' thing. Not perfect but hopefully I can improve the process for the second priest.

I love the priest - great work with the chainswords! I've been thinking about how to do a eviscerator for my traitor guard and could possibly steal this. Can I just ask what chainsword and what arms you used for this model?

Well those are...sexy. If your any good with greenstuff they'd look even better if you'd sculpt on some grissly trohpies-pelts on their...err belts, fingers and ears, etc. ^^

@Doombiscuit: Thanks a lot. The chainswords are just from the Cadian box although the marine ones would work just as well (actually better since you wouldn't have to remove the winged skull) and the arms are from the Chaos Marauder Horsemen box.

@Wyrmalla: To be honest I was trying to keep that side of things fairly minimal (apart from the odd skull or helmet) as I feel it can get a little silly very quickly, just a personal preference really. Might try some bones though, that might work, thanks

Tanks guys

@Gorfan: I haven't really looked at the IA list to tell the truth, out of simplicity more than anything else, although once I've got a legal force I might try making it fit to one of those lists as well for a bit of variety.

@Rogue Wolves: They are indeed marauders, from the horseman box I made my roughriders from, you get loads of spares, I honestly have n idea why a 5 man unit would come with 15+ heads but dammit I'm grateful.

Few little updates to the guard, started work on my second squad leader, still needs work but the basics are there, he'll probably be getting some fur around his collar later today.

And started painting my priest, and by painting I mean 'finished the one shoulderpad with the Khorne symbol on then got bored and played WoW'.

I also entered my first little mini tournament with my Orks at Warhammer World yesterday (yay) and proceeded to come basically last (boo), but since it was my first experience of playing the game outside of people I know personally I can't feel too bad about it... on the plus side they seemed interested in maybe, one-day, possibly, maybe displaying my Orks in one of the cabinets there, which was nice.

Good work on the conversions. The marauder horsemen are a lovely kit.

It is an oath we honour. Have a couple of things to update with today:

First off, hope everyone had a Merry Christmas or (if you don't happen to celebrate it) a happy Sunday.

I decided to try and add a few more interesting poses into my guardsmen, not just a horde of guys standing in more or less the same way, have my first 2 experiments, just need some tidying up around the edges before priming:

First one was nothing too major, just a bit of trimming and green-stuffing to get the arms and torso to sit differently.

This one took a bit more work, mostly because I've never tried to make a strap like this before, Quite like the look though, so I'll probably be adding a few more guardsmen with their lasguns on straps.

And, although not part of my guard, still on the Khornate theme, I found an old monopose Berserker and have been going through the long and arduous process of stripping, dismantling, cleaning up and reposing him into something a little less... well, monopose. Secretly, I'm just doing this so I'll have him to paint and hopefully satiate my craving to buy some of those marvellous FW Berserkers... at least for a while.

Aaaand completely unrelated to my guard, but as I got him for Christmas and want to show him off, my new Ven Dread for my Deathwing (still lots of stuff blu-tacked and in need to cleaning up), I asked the wife nicely and she let me have the spare feet from her Mk IV dread which I greatly prefer over the standard dreads feet.

Going to try and actually get some painting on the guard done this week... not promising anything, I do so love painting Dreadnoughts.

I see that you're using a lot of different components for each guardsmen in this army, and I thought I might poke my head in and give some ideas. First off, I love the conversions, they look wonderful. Second, there was a pictoral list of IG regiments in the 3rd edition codex: IG, and one of them was called the Nordian Berzerkers. they were basically Cadians with Chaos Marauder Horsemen heads and Chaos Warrior Capes.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

Thanks Brotheralexos.

Nordian Berzerkers, eh? That might actually solve the problem I had of trying to come up with a planet they originally came from, I'll try and find a copy of the old 3rd Edition codex to have a look, cheers .

It's been a little while since I updated this blog, it's mostly been due to my attention being drawn away from the Guard by a couple of other things, the first being a renewed vigour for drawing my cartoony guys (which I'll post in a little while) and the other I'll get to in a second.

However, the latter project did mean I often had a little extra greenstuff at the end of the day so the Guard got their fair share of embellishments, mostly in the shoulder pad region:

The last couple were done simply to see if I could, the skull need s a bit of tiding up I think but I was pretty pleased with the Khorne symbol... although it was pure, pure evil to do.

The other project that took my time and provided me with greenstuff was a new Mek for my Orks. I already have 2 KFF ones but I wanted to have a play with a SAG, so I raided my bitzbox, ripped apart an old clock and the motor for a pull-back car and set about making one. Only real problem was I didn't have any bodies of Legs left, so rather than do the sensible thing and simply order them off a bitz site I took on the challenge of making ones from scratch and therefore making him a full-blown Cybork! Quite pleased with the result, will be priming him later today, hopefully.

The story goes that the first time he tried out his SAG it went a little wrong and teleported his lower torso, left arm and lower jaw into the chest of an unfortunate guardsman. It would not be a pleasant sight.

If I was sensible I would have taken many WIP shots of him too... but I'm an idiot.
