I've got these sweet models I'm working on as Vanguards... how opposed would you think most players would be to having shields on units that counted as honour guard?

I would say count as Artificer Armor. But there are quite a few rules lawyers out there so you better have something prepared to replace them if they won't let you count as. I think most people could see the creativity in counting it as Artificer Armor. Post pics, I wanna see these. Sounds pretty pimp.

Seeing as how both units have the option of have SS, I don't see anyone having a problem with it.

Honor Guard can only get a single Combat Shield as far as I remember - not Storm Shields.

Space Marines... I thought that if I needed to justify it, I'd just say that the guys without artificer armor had shields to supplement it (everything else is WYSIWYG).

I'm waiting for some more capes from Anvil Industries and some HH torso armor to finish the last 2 guys... then I'll post the unpainted pics.

They've got sheathed power weapons, relic blades, holstered pistols, grenades, auspex, helmet crests, boot daggers, etc. I treated each of them as a unique character with various mismatched and customized weaponry (like the fluff explains it) instead of the clones that GW gives us. I made the chapter banner a power pack banner... a little bit of a stretch, but like it, and I already have a fully painted canon Honour Guard, so I feel like I can make these guys how I like them.

They started as Vanguards, now I have that personnel attachment we all get when you really put some thought and energy into a unit... and I feel like they "need" to be elevated to Honour Guard.

My bad, I was thinking blood angels. I forgot that Vanilla marines have an honour guard unit in this edition too.

I'd rather have back the old Terminator command squads... but hey, now I can pay the same points and lose my invuln save

The shields should be fine, as long as it's done in a way that they're not easily confused with Storm Shields elsewhere in the army.

As always, with this kind of thing, the better they look the fewer complaints you'll get. I know someone who has a Spartan-themed mech Blood Angels army with literally every model in the force equipped with Spartan-style round shields and third-party Spartan-helmeted heads. The painting is gorgeous, so it looks awesome, and I don't think he gets any complaints. OTOH, I don't think he uses any units with actual Storm Shields in that army, so there's nothing for them to get confused with.

Only SS I ever use are on TH/SS Terms, so hopefully I get the same pass as him... BTW, that army sounds pretty sweet!
