I heard about this last month and the product went online at the GW website tonight. Some of you may already be using this scenery item from Scenic Express or other sources. Games Workshop is now selling it as well with their own name on the package. A casual comparison of number of tufts per package makes it appear that the GW packaged product is about the same price or better priced than the aforementioned source. This is a nice contrast to their repackaged Kneadatite (Green Stuff).

How is this compared to just standard static grass? I can never get that stuff to look convincing, so maybe premade tufts would be better...

It is cool, a fellow hobbyist showed me this stuff a few years ago. There's lots of product out there like this, both tufts and strips and patches. Check out the Silflor product at Scenic Express.

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

Army painter has had this stuff around for almost a year. More colors and cheaper than gw. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Good job gw on being original again.

It's a good idea I guess, but what's the difference between this stuff, and dabbing a drop of glue on your base and putting your own tuft of static grass on it?

is this stuff like a peel & stick sticker or something?

Mininature Silfor tufts are approx 8x3" for $6 (approx 25c/sq inch) (they also have a much larger sheet, but I'm trying to keep the products more or less comparable).

GWS-rebadged Silfor tufts are approx 8x6" for $13.25 (approx 27c/sq inch)

Army Painter-rebadged Silfor tufts are approx 6x1.7"for $5 (approx 49c/sq inch)

Not sure by what definition the AP tufts are a better buy, other then currently having more colors available.

Not the most innovative product, but more of this stuff is welcome. I actually rather like Army Painter's grass tufts, and it's good to see Games Workshop realizing that it's not the sole progenitor of ideas.
Now if only they would apply this copycat mindset and abandon Finecast.

I kinda raised an eyebrow at the price, but apparently it's comparable to what's already out there. Don't really plan on using it myself, though.

I use the Army Painter version of this. You literally tear off the 'tuft' you want and stick it directly onto the base. I found after repeated play, these tufts would fall off (they are sticky backed), but I just put them back in place and use a dab of white glue and I've had no further issues.

It's easier and faster to use than the traditional method of using static grass.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

For those wondering about the difference between grass tufts and static grass, here is an example of Army Painter grass tufts(green) near GW static grass (yellow)... there is a significant difference in size and final end appearance between the two. I'm really happy to hear GW is adding the product and that the pricing is decent!

Here's an example of the mininatur 2-tone autumn tufts on top of short static grass. I find using both together gives the nicest range of texture.

No need to break any GW ban.

There are several companies who have been selling this stuff for a very long time. There are many variations on colour, length, etc. There's even types with foliage, flowers, snow.

Ooooh, pretty

EDIT - It's another example of a bad use of WD though. I saw the stuff advertised in the magazine and thought, "meh, static grass on selotape". I didn't realise there was a major difference until I clicked on this thread. They might have devoted a page to showing you what it actually looked like on a base as opposed to to showing a top down view in new releases.

EDIT - O... K... I now realise they kind of do this on the cover of the packet, but still...

Not to be pedantic but I'm not sure if a straight square centimeter comparison is the best way to compare the two products. Take the pictures for example;

Just an estimate--but I would say 50% of the Games Workshop tack to which the grass is applied is blank. I can state with a bit of security--that the Army Painter photo is reflective of what you actually receive as well (Considering I have 3 different color variations sitting on my work bench).

All that said, I really don't think pricing is an issue with either product. Three of the Army Painter grass tufts have done a number of armies now--so once you buy one, you typically don't need to purchase another.

I find it funny that the guys who supposedly don't like GW "hate posts" are trying so hard to antagonize people into posting them. The only real "hate" so far has been from Pipboy101, and judging from the pics AgeOfEgos posted, I'd say his criticism is probably a little warranted...although I don't know how seriously you can say "omg GW are rip-off artists!" here considering it's grass turf for models, which as you can see plenty of other companies produce, too, and it only makes sense for GW to make their own. And judging from the WNT post about them it's not even like they're trying to build this as if it were some glorious hobby revolution, it was more like "Here's some grass tufts! You buy!", and personally I can live with that.

My only real criticism of the product is that the sheets do look pretty bare compared to the Army Painter brand, and there aren't many colors to choose from. I imagine there will be more colors later and I don't even really care about the former that much, since as it's been pointed out one package will probably last you a while anyway (unless you're doing an entire game board but that's true of GW sand/static grass as well, in which case you should be looking elsewhere as that would be one expensive-ass project).

Thanks for the pretties - I've seen a few of them before, but it is always nice to have other options. I was making my comment on the GW stuff based on that they were quoted as being reasonably cheap (shock horror I know ).

I think I am going to try picking some of this stuff up. It does look very neat, especially if it was tall - so you could put a sniper in in - or if it was in dark red or black, so you could use it for slaneshi themed daemonic armies as pubic tufts.

... what? You were all thinking it.
