HoN is another DotA clone, and consequently worse than the original.

DOTA is free if you already own Frozen Throne (I think that's the game its based on).

Hon and LoL both use microtrans afaik. I haven't tried HoN at all.

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne is the expansion to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, a RTS game developed and published by Blizzard. It is not free.

Ok. HoN seems cooler to me though, more heros. Now can i get some real advise on actual playing the game instead of recemandations to similar ones.

Honestly, HoN has fewer users so there might not be anyone here who can help you. LoL as far as I know is the most popular Dota game at the moment.

EDIT: Define more? I mean is it really that big a deal? LoL must have six or seven dozen now. That's plenty of variety.

Don't let Karon see that.

I'd love to be able to give some advice, but with as much LoL as I play, I've never played HoN, or know anyone who does.

I only tried HoN once, because I personally find it's art style more pleasing, but the clunky HUD and just plain wierd matchmaking kinda ruined it for me.

All I really know is that you NEED to buy one Homeward Stone whatchamahoosit every time you go to town; it instantly teleports you to your base, where as in LoL you just have the ability to tele back.

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

If it's true its true, not that I have numbers of how many people still play original Dota. LoL apparently has 3 million accounts which is pretty damn good.

Might change when Dota 2 launches though.

Heroes of Newerth.

Like LoL it had a way of trying to compete with the incoming DoTA 2. While LoL went with yet another unbalanced game mode addition (now 2, twisted treeline and dominion (5v5 was hard enough to balance as is these started rather broken)), HoN decided to finally go free to play if I remember correctly.

Its -not- true, though. Many people have 2-3 accounts in LoL, but the majority of the community is too stupid to realize this when Riot flaunts their numbers.

DotA is immensely popular in Asia, and is has been popular for about 6 years. LoL won't get traction in the asian market because its not a competitive game.

There's a reason that DotA(2) beats LoL in every poll of better game or "what game should be at X convention", and that reason is the Chinese.

And 1 million players is something to scoff at?

Asians do seem like old Blizzard-ish games that are competitive.

A game that hasn't released wins because Dota is it's title. And better does not correlate to more popular. As if internet polling is anymore reliable than Riot's account numbers. EDIT: Again I don't know the numbers. But I hardly ever hear anyone talk about Dota anymore. They talk about LoL or Dota 2.

Get banned --> new account ----> get banned ----> new account.
The life cycle of most of the community.

I always played on things like Garena, and always had 500k+ players for dota alone, and that's just one third party networking program, of which there are dozens out there. ( no one uses battle.net)

Anyway, to chowder, if you want the most competitive and balanced version. Just buy warcraft 3 + exp for 10 bucks and download the dota map. LoL is based on microtransactions so..yeah...

As for HoN, never played it, but never heard anything good about it from my fellow dota mates (who tried them all). Just know this, all of these games have steep learning curves, and don't expect to win your first 5 to 25 games based on your own doings. Basing this of dota, but games can last for more then 1 hour, so will be quite the time sink, and it wil take hundreds of games to get anywhere near a skilled level since if you really want to compete, you need all the in and outs of every hero stored in your head.

It's essentially LoL without the masteries and runes now from what I've heard. Sort of in between DoTA and LoL.

It's hard to give good advice on a game like HoN. It's something that you really need to play for awhile and get used to. If you've never played a game like it before, it's hard to get through strategies with text, but here goes:

Last hit:
You want to get the last hit on creep waves. To do this, you really need to time your attacks well. The trick with this is that with a melee character, you'll be right next to a creep wave which is in the danger zone.

Tower dive:
This is when you go after an opposing hero to try and kill them and run in the range of one of the defense towers. Don't do this until you're experienced in the game.

Mid:
Don't take the middle lane until you are experience in the game.

Item builds:
These are different for each character, check the HoN forums for builds.

Call MIAs:
Type out (or voice) when a hero goes missing from your lane. This can potentially save your teammates. On the same token, have good map awareness and don't rely on your teammates calling MIAs, they don't always come.

Really, I could continue, but those are the basics and really all the text in the world isn't going to help you much early on, you really just need to get in and play it. That being said, the HoN community is generally pretty bad (the same is true for most DotA communities). Expect to get yelled at, and cursed at, etc.

The only place with a good community as far as I've found, is in dedicated high level dota rooms. Like on garena the 25+ room.

The best thing to start out, is playing No-stat public games, and not matchmaking. If you play Matchmaking, you'll probably get raged at if your new.

For Basic Heroes, you can't go wrong with ranged intel heroes. They are generally the best to learn on, as they can be a bit more forgiving with their range, in addition to a lot of their Skillshot abilities being a lot easier to land.

Plague Rider is a very good hero, and cheap Silver coin wise. Witch Slayer is also up there. I'd say practice with ranged heroes, first, then you can move on to melee heroes. Soul Reaper is also great to learn on.

Overall, the best thing you can do is play. HoN is based a lot more on skill, than LoL and requires that you learn what all the heroes can do. You are going to get trounced early on, that's just how it is. As you start to learn the capabilties of your own heroes, and the rest of the heroes, you'll find yourself getting much better.

Hope this helps.

There isn't a way to have autonomous AI heroes. You can spawn some heroes, but they will be level 1 and do nothing but auto-attack.

Ah ok, will do some practise with ranged then do a few casual games, then i will tell you the results!
