So, in the Vanilla Codex, on Pg18, the picture of the Ultramarines' 2nd company, the Dreadnought on the right, with the Multimelat,. On it's left shinguard, it has a Scroll. It reads Imperator Guilliman.


Thoughts/ Is this just 2 words thrown together, or something more, that the artist was trying to get acros, or something else entirly?

I think its most likly the 1st, that they are not connected, but discuss away.

Well, seeing as C:SM has a lot of Ultramarines stuff in it, I suppose the dreadnought is an Ultramarine who earned an "Emperor Gulliman" award or something.

But is it not heresy to call someone other than the Emperor, imperator...?

From a nerdy history geek point of view: Imperator in ancient Rome simply meant someone who wielded powers of command over Roman troops. So it could just be a reference to Gulliman being commander of an imperial unit.

Imperator did not originally mean emperor, it came to mean that later because after Augustus the right of command over imperial troops became a sole preserve of the emperor.

Its later meaning is something akin to commander-in-chief, supreme commander, generalissimo, etc.

It's probably just cool words stuck on there by the artist. You see Marines, dreadnoughts, etc. plastered with "DORN", "INFERNUS", "LEGIO" and other Greco-Roman sounding words and names of primarchs all the time.

According to wiki (the all-knowing, all-powerful), Imperator is just Latin for commander. Perhaps the artist just wanted a cool sounding award for his dreadnought.

Perhaps the dreadnought in question was a former company commander. The Gulliman could simply be an award of service. Naming an award after a primarch would make the award pretty darn impressive to put on your resume (or leg scroll).

An award for strategy maybe?

yeah, I doubted it meant that they were hinting at Guilliman becoming the new Emperor, but just someting to ponder.

Gulliman was Supreme Allied Commander of the entire Imperium for a while. It probably refers to his reign as the "second Warmaster".
