While reading through the rules and lists form Dogs and Devils, a few questions popped up as I am putting together a HG Heavy Recon list and a US 3rd infantry division rifle company.
1) The sharpshooter upgrade for the US force. This seems to be a special rule. I assume there does not have to be a specific base (extra base) for this upgrade?
2) The Axis HG Heavy platoon (pg. 60) shows a greyed out observer rifle team with the Mortar section (optional purchase). This is not mentioned in the text, I assume you do get the observer and vehicle as part of the mortar upgrade to the platoon?
3) General quation - how close can your two objective markers be?
4) and the really daft one - can mobile artillery e.g. Wespe's dig in or is that just an infantry rule (I said it was a noob one!)...?
Thanks in advance for clarifications.

I don't own Dogs and Devils, so I can't answer those questions.

Objective locations are based on the mission that you're playing, and the mission setup instructions should tell you how close or how far apart objectives need to be. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that spreading the objectives out tends to work in the attacker's favor. The defender is typically (Roadblock is the other way around to allow the player being ambushed to go first) tasked with maintaining control of both objectives while the attacker is only trying to take control of one objective. Spreading the objectives out forces the defender to spread his troops out to maintain control over all of the objectives. If the objectives are close together, then it's easier for the defender to mass his forces while simultaneously covering the objectives. The attacker ordinarily has a reasonable degree of latitude in placing objectives, but for obvious reasons will typically want to keep them somewhat seperated.

Thanks for your reply Eumerin. It seems that defending is pretty much about stacking the objectives together if you can get away with it, but is guided by the scenario. I really need to get some games under my belt to get a feel for deployment.

The basic rule of thumb is that vehicles cannot dig in. Infantry teams and Gun teams can.

Additionally, an armored vehicle such as a Wespe wouldn't receive any benefit from digging in. As an armored vehicle, it gets the same primary benefit that bulletproof cover provides - i.e. the opponent needs to pass a firepower test in order to destroy it.

Thanks to both of you for helping clarify the rules for a new player. Really looking forward to some painting and gaming. FoW really seems to draw me in more than "another major company's battle games".

Also note that while your vehicles can't dig in, they can still go to ground if they're in concealment.

Thanks for the additional clarification Vertrucio. I feel a bit better about the 310 point investment in the Wespe's now(!)

They are pretty effective artillery actually, they have caused problems against my US armored rifles in the few games I have played against them.
