Hi everyone. So, I only really play one army - CSM - and I have two opponents that I play against regularly. They both only play one army each - Tau and IG. The Tau doesn't use a lot of vehicles, while the IG does. I'm getting to the point where I have accumulated enough models that I could make multiple different lists with what I've got, and have been playing around with the idea of making a list to combat the Tau and making a list to combat the IG - separate lists. Not sure if I will, though.

I'm wondering how many of you do this in your games? Do you tailor your list based upon who you know you'll play against, and bring multiple lists (from the same codex) when you head out to play, just in case? Or do you generally just run a single, take-all-comers list no matter who you're playing?

If I am playing my friends, sure, I may occasionally tweak the list a little to give my little plastic men a bit more of an advantage. For serious tournament lists, I run for as many types of threats as I can.

In either instance, however, you may not know exactly what people are running till the stuff hits the table anyway, so why not just run an all-comers list?

I never know who im going to play when I walk into the store so i have a very generalist list

Know thy self. Everything follows this.

All comers, always. With my IG, whether its foot or mech, I'm prepared for any army, and any variation within each army.

List tailoring is just...boring. Its simply not fun.

Unless your weaking it on purpose to give your friends a fighting chance... Or if your friend beats you every time I wouldn't tailor it to who you play...

With my finances not in favor of the hobby I tend to go all comers with a slight favor towards dealing with the mechness of this edition.

I tend run a TAC list as I go into the store and just play whoevers available.
But tbh in your situation, just running a different list every game and having fun with crazy ideas would likely be a better idea to keep it interesting

Yeah, I'm not quite at the point where it's getting old yet, but I was thinking about tailoring because the two armies I play against are so vastly different. However, I still have a greater than 50% win rate, and kinda felt like tailoring would be... I don't know. Overkill? Unfair? Not that I'm some great player, mind you. But anyway, just curious about what other people do.

I play with the same group of people each time, because I walked out of my NFLGS (n for 'not') and haven't been back to play since. I have my own table, and anyone who wants to play a game plays at my house. I don't change my list up much, it can handle tanks, but it's definitely a largely anti-infantry list. But that's the metagame in my area-mostly infantry. As such, I have a list to deal with my metagame. Don't build to table a friend, unless they're running the biggest WAAC list or think it's fun to run a broken, housemade rulebook that makes GK and SW look like a crappy tier 3 army. Then go crazy reminding them why it's not good to with you

I've always tried to play a TAC list, and for the most part I succeed. Feilding necrons is very often IMO, an auto TAC army, with the gauss rules. The only thing that gives me trouble is large number of MCs, or multiple quick assaulting units. Both of which can be mitigated by some good tactical decisions.

If I'm playing against strangers, all comers.

Typically I'm playing against friends, or more often my wife, in which case it is always scenario based, and I tailor to the scenario. However, this doesn't mean I optimize to the scenario. I think asymetric warfare is the most fun to play, so often we like to give one side a numerical/point advantage, and the other a troop choice advantage.

I find the traditional point balanced, optimized 40k game very boring.

I make one list for common point values.

I do not deviate from these lists unless after numerous games of play testing something isn't working against multiple armies/opponents.

I don't tailor my lists because I find it pretty unsportsmanlike. If my buddy brings scissors and I bring nothing but rock with no paper, that's not fun for either of us. My Iron Warriors have tons of anti-Marine firepower, but I'm using the same list whether I'm fighting IG or Grey Knights.

My lists are all comers, with a bias against marines since most people have them. Its not intentional, its just something that happens.

That is a good distinction. My all-comers lists does have a lot of anti-mech, since there is a lot of mech on the field. I don't think that balancing your all-comers list against the expected field isthe same as tailoring.

TAC is fairly standard for my necrons, with almost everyone of the guns being effective against armor.
