When deploying, am I allowed to deploy characters with the units I intend to have them deployed into or do I deploy the unit, then deploy the character, then deploy that character into that unit ( or wait for my turn to start to move him into that unit)?

Depends if the mission says so then yes, example the one where you roll for where the units show up.

If you are not playing that mission thing then no you deploy them last but all your lords and heroes go down at the same time.

Yes, you can deploy a character attached to a unit, unless the mission forces you to deploy otherwise

I always state before deployment with my daemons. "The appropriate heralds are already in their units, however for following protocol assume that all are deployed when Mr. Thirster is deployed."

The point of deploying characters last is a matter of polite deception allowed by the rules. The rules don't force you to tip your hand that your general is going here with these guys I put down early to throw you off... that sort of thing.

If you don't care that your opponent knows ahead of time where your characters are going, then it really doesn't matter all that much. It's just a small thing one can use to play shell games during deployment.

IIRC, if any characters are starting the game in a unit they must be deployed with that unit. Unless the scenerio has characters roll seperatly, in which case you roll and then can deploy them with a unit that deploys in the same zone as the character rolled.

In fact, the only time I'm aware that you can CHOOSE to deploy them with a unit (RAW, as opposed to just going ahead and doing it anyway which just surrenders the small advantage and no one will complain about it) as opposed to after all units have been deployed, is in the two funky deployment scenarios - the one where you roll to see which side you deploy in, and the one where your units might be in reserve. You can then CHOOSE to put a character in a unit to share its die roll, rather than rolling separately. The rest of the time, you are supposed to deploy all units first, and THEN characters last.

Not true. I play Orcs, and Grimgor MUST stay with his Immortals.

The Screaming Bell and Plague Furnace also MUST to be deployed into a unit of Clan Rats/Stormvermin or Plague Monks respectively.

So do slaan with a TG in the army.

Okay, I stand (well, sit) corrected. There are a FEW characters that MUST deploy with a unit.

But in general, they do not.
