When it crosses the line and becomes Industrial. I just got my sweaty mitts on the new Korn album 'The Path Of Totality', and at times it sounds like NiN in thier pomp.
The fact is, I've been completely cold towards Dubstep since this whole 'next big thing' became big in the public eye. It just never interested me at all. Until I heard that Korn were working on thier new album and it would be a Dubstep/Metal crossover, heavily involving some dude who goes by the moniker 'Skrillex'. Well, colour me intrigued.
After hearing the first single from the album, the wonderfully uplifting 'Narsissitic Cannibal', I was hooked. Although, I really don't class this as 'Dubstep', no sir this bastard love child of Metal and Dubstep is most certainly industrial in it's sound.
The opening track is awesome and it kind of draws you in from there really. Jonathan Davies' whining vocals actually complement the backing tracks laid down wonderfully well, although I would like too see how they pull this gak off live!
After the aural bombardment that the first song, 'Chaos Lives In Everything' provides, it just does not let up. The sheer amount of violent and eardrum shattering bass lines is just immense...
I'm still not a fan of Dubstep. But this new 'Industrial' I could get into very quickly.
Well, I didn't see the new Korn as industrial...when I think "industrial", bands like NiN, KMFDM, Rammstein, and Megaherz that come to mind...I don't know, I just can't compare new Korn to bands like those...

You basically take techno, but remove regular rhythm. One of the guys I work with used to be in the rave scene. He described it as "you know when a DJ is playing live, screws up, and does a jarring, hard cut? That's what dubstep is."

I like deadmau5, but that's about it. There is some good stuff out there, but a lot of it is just trash some kid's making on his laptop with pirated music software
I thought dubstep step was an entire genre one hit wonder., and already uncool. The "not really music actually" dubstep genre is still being talked about?

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I heard Scrillex *for the first time not long ago and like his stuff, and I'm a casual Industrial fan from back in the day.
Sounds good!

Errr, nope. It's a surprise for me certainly, because I've never liked it. This album may change my mind however and it's not the first time my mind has been changed by a surprising album..

Manny you might have been around. Does this stuff not remind you of:
1. A matrix soundtrack or more importantly:
2. 1980s Eurotech disco club music.

I wouldn't see 80s disco music, but disco/dance club music of the last couple of decades certainly contains big beats, so in that respect, sure. The industrial drill-type noises are more a hallmark of Industrial, which is a less-popular genre.
The Matrix soundtrack used a lot of electronic/club-based music too, so some similarity there isn't shocking.
How similar they are really depends on how much you listen to this kind of stuff. The more you listen to it the more clearly you can differentiate between different types and the less they sound similar. Much like someone who listens to Country on a regular basis can easily tell the difference between Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash, but to someone who never listens to either they're both just "that Country stuff".

I'm being specific about Euroclub music, so disco is a bit of a misnomer.

Hrm. Any examples?

Dubstep is an electronic dance music genre related to speed garage, but where the beat is usually 'half-timed' (i.e. the drum pattern that usually occurs within one bar is stretched over two to give the impression of a slower tempo) - the pulse is usually 140bpm. I like it.
