Plaguebearer with a Flu

I'm participating in an escalation tournament, and my first opponent was kind enough, by which I mean he was bragging to everyone, to explain how he plans on destroying his first opponent.
I just read the listings, and I'm his first opponent. I'm in here with Chaos Daemons, and he's playing Imperial Guard, so I could use all the help I can get.
We're starting at 500 points.
He's running a Company Command Squad, a Leman Russ Battle Tank, a Penal Legion and a Veteran Squad.
I can't be certain what else he's using until we're deploying.

A Soul Grinder would probably drain the color from his face real quick, but I am not sure if you can afford one at this level.
I would use as many Bloodletters as you can fit on the table.

unit of/a flamer(s) obligitory any points level, 4+ glance/kill any of his men is brilliant, easily capable of making his men run/take a bucketload of wounds. Also glancing his chimeras, that way his shooting phase is severely compromised when the rest of your troops have landed.
2 Flamers 70
1 blood crusher X2- 80 points= 150 points. Will affect his deployment and ever tried gunning down a crusher with Las guns?
Just focus on his big guns, once your troops enter combat it's as good as won.

Are there restrictions on what you can run? alot of 500 point set ups have certain rules, like no
models with more than 2 wounds, armor point limits, etc....

If his opponent is taking a Leman Russ, there probably isn't an armor restriction. But, any restrictions could be a game breaker.
And man does that Guard list suck. XD For 500 points, he could have had so many guns a blazing he wouldn't know what to do! Instead he's invested in 1 Leman Russ. A Soulgrinder would anihilate him for that very reason. A Leman Russ has a hard time taking it out and the Soul Grinder can rip apart basically all of his army in a few shots. Give it the tongue (the str. 10 shot), deep strike semi close to his Leman Russ, tongue it and assault what's left. Hell, that alone might win ya the game. Round out with Bloodletters and a cheap HQ and you're golden.

Or he may not know. could you imagine the look on his face if he finds out it's not legal. especially after trash talking.

Tongue is one shot at BS3. That's not reliable anti-tank. If he's taking penal legions, you probably don't have to worry about him being particularly good either.
Then again, you're playing Daemons, which I'd say is one of the hardest lists with which to try and beat Imperial Guard. You need to tie up his stuff in CC, and do it quickly. Bloodcrushers are probably your best bet (They should be able to handle incoming fire for a turn), and possibly some Fiends for the Leman (Rear Armor is 10 on a vanilla).

I agree with Irdiumstern, best bet is fiends and crushers. throw a few plague bearers in for troops that can tie stuff up and you should do ok.
daemons at 500 are even harder because you can't really stack your waves. 1400 vs 2000 vs do able 250 vs 500 is harder. See If They will make and exception to your rules or he will only have 2 maybe 3 squads to focus and you might be in trouble.

Hey, semi-off thread here.
I am about to start running daemons. Anyone have some links for basic tactics they can provide? I could only find one that just listed descriptions of how to use each unit.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

For me 500 points should be...
HQ - Tzeetch Herald w/ Chariot, Bolt, MoS ~100
Elite - 6x Fiends ~180
Troops-5x Horrors w/ Bolt~100
Troops-5x Horrors w/ Bolt ~100
That is a 5 wound Jetbike model plus 2 units with AP4 shooting and there just is not enough firepower at this level to take down 6 Fiends before they eat things.
Alternatively I might go with...
HQ Tzeetch Herald - Bolt ~50
Troops - 5x Horrors - Bolt~100
Troops - 5x Horrors - Bolt ~100
Heavy - Soul Grinder - Naked ~125
Heavy - Soul Grinder - Naked ~125
I do not think any army can handle two AV 13 Fleet Walkers at this point level...

HQ - Tzeetch Herald w/ Chariot, Bolt, MoS ~100 Elite - 6x Fiends ~180 Troops-5x Horrors w/ Bolt~100 Troops-5x Horrors w/ Bolt ~100 This is a pretty solid list. I'd prob tweak to: Herald of Tzeentch-same-100 3 Fiends, 1 w might-100 3 Fiends, 1 with might-100 5 Horrors w bolt and Changeling, 1 w instrument -105 5 Horrors w bolt-95 Total:500 exactly Basically the same idea, but the Changeling squad and Fiends have wound allocation potential. 2 squads of 3 Fiends also forces target priority ore and lets you bring in 3 units for your first wave instead of only 2. With Daemons, the little things matter

This is a better buildout for the list, I totally agree with taking two units of 3 in this case. The Might also lets you ID T3 enemies which is a nice perk.
I tend to leave special chars at home, but the Changeling is definitely an auto include for this type of tournament and in general.

Soulgrinders are 135.
In terms of cost-efficiency, fiends and Tzeentch heralds on chariots are 2 of the most efficient (and best) units in the daemon dex.
I like calypso2ts' first list. That would be what I would bring (list #1) also and it makes for a great foundation to add units to in the escalation league.

That is the ~ trick in there of course, I think if you add up the list it should still be legal though.
I like the first one too, but it makes me feel happy to drop 2 Ironclads into a 500 point game...

This discussion makes me truly lament that I can't afford to buy a pair of Soul Grinders by Saturday.
I also discovered that he's upgrading (downgrading?) his Leman Russ to a Punisher. By "discovered", I mean he walked up, showed it off, and asked what I thought of the paintjob; then told me he was going to use it on my Bloodletters.

Don't worry about what he brings. Focus on building a balanced list and it wouldn't really matter too much what he brings.

Bloodletters do poorly against IG. The 2 most solid anti IG units IG has is plaguebearers and fiends.
|
Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Tough Traitorous Guardsman

I would recommend a squad of Flamers since they can and will (if they ds were you want them) kill a squad of vets/penals in one go and if he has them close to his tank you will most likely get a glancing hit on it aswell (crew-shaken/stunned and it wont be able to shoot making the way for your anti tank to kill it).
The Flamers will then be his nr 1 priority making him turn every gun against them wasting his fire power on them leaving your other units free to remain alive for the next round in wich you get to assault.
And if he lets them live they get to repeat the killing since 12" move will surley get them were they will do the most damage.
