The problem GW encountered was that they created all of these super-near invincible, essentially immortal dudes, but never stopped to figure out why they all weren't around anymore, lol.

That's why over a third of the loyal ones just up and disappeared for no apparent reason instead of continuing their duty to the Imperium (Russ, Vulkan, Corax, Khan), and others are sorta-dead (Guilliman and Johnson).

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Fulgrim holds the record for killing the most Primarchs, Ferrus Manus and Guilliman... Well maybe he isn't exactly dead but I just really dislike Guilliman.

He's dead enough.

As for dead primarchs:
II/XI: unknown
The Lion: Asleep. Battled Luther while their planet was ripped apart around them. Awesome enough to be forgiven for losing to an old man. (Luther wins by knockout )
Fulgrim: Possessed, but alive. His body's killed two primarchs. Soul may be in a painting made of faeces and blood, or still in his body, forced to watch what the daemon does with him.
Dorn: Is either dead or walking around the Warp with no hands, depending on who you believe. Loses points for being killed by a non-main character.
Kurze: Suicide by assassin. Bonus points for sheer awesome.
Sanguinius: Killed after debating with Horus on the merits of being a lunatic worshipper of Chaos. The winner of the debate remains unknown. It's claimed (by me) that Freddie Mercury was the guest speaker.
Manus: Won, then lost a duel with Fulgrim. Bonus for taking a thunder hammer to the head.
Guilliman: Lost most of his neck to Fulgrim. Poisoned. Held in a stasis pod. May or may not be experiencing the same sensations he was when he was put into the pod. If he is, he's likely completely insane. Bonus for fate worse than death.
Vulkan: Apparently still alive. Left his legion clues for a scavenger hunt, but ran away when he realised he had no prizes to give out.
Corax: Nevermore.
Alpharius/Omegon/Sheed Ranko: Killed by Guilliman. Bonus for no one knowing who the hell you are.

And don't forget that the traitor ones hate the Imperium so much that they spend all their time on their new worlds in the Eye of Terror.

Just like the people who hate animals so much they go vegan. It would be nice if they had more campaigns with primarchs, like an Imperium- Chaos campaign based around a battle between Russ and Magnus. Of course, they won't do that, but it'd be nice.

They very well could. I've seen a few people say that it was just his hands though, and am unwilling to declare them wrong until I can provide a source or two.

I think there may be fluff for both, I belive (But don't quote me on it) that the fists in amber is more recent, and thus retcons the whole skeleton bit, but I'm not sure.

Either way, he's not going to be much good in a fight. Unless he gets power fists grafted on or something.

Maybe he can accompany Abbadon, since they both have no arms.

Didn't Manus lose both duels to Fulgrim? I'm pretty sure Fulgrim just couldn't bring himself to kill Manus the first time.

According to Fulgrim (in the HH series), he did. Probably couldn't do it the firsttime because the daemon hadn'ttaken full control.

actually we now know that Dorn killed Alpharius before Terra was even invaded. Gulliman may have killed Omegon, but I'm betting they'll reveal he too died ages ago and that Alpharis by the 41st M is basicly the dread pirate roberts

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
