The universe of 40K is a pretty scary place, i can see alot of smaller scale horror stories that could play out in the warhammer universe.
I was wondering if people had any film style ideas for 40k but not the usual big battle kind of thing but maybe somthing alittle different. After all alot more stuff must go on that just epic battles.
So any film ideas for 40k other than large scale battles?
Im thinking a sci-fi horror, a crew awaken from a long period of sleep aboard a ship drifting through space. As they awake unsure how they got aboard they discover the ships systems dead, after exploring they find they are not alone aboard.
Im thinking possibly some Tyranids or maybe chaos, very Event horizon, dead space, aliens inspired.
Haha your avatar is exactly what you described I loved Pandorum. Super under-rated movie, and it's been awhile since there was an awesome space sci-fi thriller(I'd say event horizon was the last best one).
I'd say some cadians finding out there's a genestealer population growing/spreading on a ship would be interesting, but it'd obviously be more action orientated...

Then watch Sunshine. It has the added bonus of having Danny Boyle directing and a really great cast. Also, Moon is a great one that nobody saw. They're both less horror-focused than Pandorum or Event Horizon, but they're still space-bound sci fi thrillers.

Oh i've seen both of those and loved them, like i said though, it's been awhile theres been a good sci-fi THRILLER. Those movies are fantastic, but not really quite "thrillers" (well, Sunshine was a bit in the end act...)

How about Supernova anyone? That film was in the same vein, and it felt a lot more intellectual than it actually was. Plus, I always wanted a bottle with a pear in it!

You know what's hilarious? About a year or two ago I was thinking of Supernova, and I mean I haven't watched that movie since high school (around the time it released) and then I couldnt sleep one night so I do what I do every night I can't sleep - turn on the Space channel... and it was on... the day i was thinking about it. Sorta creeped me out how the thought came outta nowhere and low and behold it was on later that night lol.

Genestealer Cults are an obvious one that'd be good with Horror
Another good one for horror is for Imperial Guard who are under attack by Daemons or one based on Dark Eldar
I know this is a 40K part of the forum, but I do think a movie based on Warhammer Fantasy, an epic movie series kinda like the Lord of the Rings movies could be amazing

I'd watch it, even if the voice acting is a bit dodgy If that's a fan made animation that's some damn good amateur work!

When I was reading one of the Ciaphas Cain books, I figured a high adventure-style movie with him, Jurgen, a Genestealer cult and a health amount of camp could make for a really fun movie.
I think a film following a hive gang in Necromunda would make a great film. It would have intrigue, action and some gangster all mixed in, and be epic!
I'd like a 40k movie. As long as the main character wasn't a space marine.
Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

But it would be so depressing. 'Who do you like in it?' 'Uh... Bragg.' '... I'm so sorry.'

Mine: live action Horus Heresy movie series ( 4 to 6 movies ), starting with Emperor's was to unify Earth to the Great Crusade, Primarchs Life, Horus Heresy and finally with the forming of Inquisition, High Lords of Terra and Space Marine Chapters. DOen liek LoTR style and with advanced CGI.
His idea: "Does the average movie goer have the faintest idea of what Wh40K is? No. They don't. So, if your movie wants to have success, earn praise (from fans of the source material and the rest) you have to convince people that your idea, your movie, is worthwhile, how?
I'd start with the 3rd edition Necron story, their genesis, their ascension from basicly derelicts of fate, to hierophants of evil, their story would be the one you'd have to know less about, since it is so ancient, and would be the easiest one to adapt screen wise.
Why start with this first aside from the final product aspect and actual following?
Because a massive project like the HH, would be rejected if put bluntly, it has no prepping ground, there is not enough demand for it, no one would know. The Necron movie would be achievable with a smaller budget, therefore it could be easily immune to heavy studio interference who want to ensure revenue at the cost of quality.
Now, you could say that this Necron story is not exactly a big story, and not exactly part of the more interesting canon and fluff, but that is an advantage.
If the movie is done properly, people would get curious, they would start looking into Warhammer and in any way, might possibly DEMAND another movie, "Why didn't they do this story? It's much better." or "I want to see Space Marines, Chaos, Horus, The Emperor. etc." and the present 40K fans could act as shepherds, fomenting this demand.
Then, when the studios see that there is demand, and that they'd earn money for making this film, they'd acquiesce to our requests."

Chaos could make some damn good horror/sci fi films. Especially against average troopers.
Coa, would this be soulless Necrons or the new clever Necrons?

I know a lot of people who never read, nor really knew what Lord of the Rings was about, they just knew it was a "A fantasy movie based on books" and it did remarkably well. Same with Game of Thrones really.
If you make it high enough quality to turn critics heads, even if it is a sci-fi movie, you can get a grand following. The problem with 40k is you would need to tone down the cheese factor on some things to get mass appeal.

Like I said: that's my friend idea, so - technically yes. It is said that new Necrons can be like the old ones if the player wanted to. So his idea is actually still legit.

The main problem with Sci FI, paraphrased from the guys who made Red Dwarf.
'Sci-fi is expensive, but looks cheap'
With really good computer graphics these days, that's mitigated a bit, especially if you can find programmers who will work for a dripfeed of caffiene and a stack of porno dvds (and we all know a couple of those, or can find them.. )
The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

It's so true. I've never seen battlestar galactica the series (yeah I know, flame me all you want) and my buddy was trying to get me into it, but he did bring up a good point, he said the acting is superb, but when you're talking about generators and warp fields and sci-fi jargon, it's tough to take it seriously.

One sticking point is how seriously is this movie supposed to take itself? Take Starship Troopers (movie) for example: a completely campy look at Facism and how propaganda is used to achieve goals. This is different from the Book, which is a look at the making of a Soldier in a "benevolent" facist society based off Federal service for citizenship....(total over simplification....) ST is a very serious book.
How serious a story would be told in a 40k movie.....the Tagline cant be the predominant one in the books which "There is only War" only 14-35 yr old men would go see it. At least in the LOTR trilogy there was Friendship, love, and a great quest to keep the story flowing. That is why it has to be a character based series.....(Ciaphas Cain, Ibram Gaunt, Eisenhorn)
I think the Eisenhorn would lend itself to the transistion more easily as that series had all of the plot elements needed for movie (trilogy): Action, intrigue, horror, and (for the ladies) the tradgegy of impossible love between Eisenhorn and the Rebecca (could be wrong) with him being a psyker and her a blank....
I do not discriminate....all races are equally worthless....
