I think its great that FW came out with the early Contemptor dreads based on the Epic Space Marine expansion plastic dreads, but what happened to the lower leg and knee protector?

There are 20+ illustrations of the Contemptor in the Collected Visions book and none of them have lower leg or knee protectors that look like the ones in the FW kit. In almost every illustration that shows the knee, the knee pieces are somewhat fan shaped and the lower leg piece is quite different from the kit, looking like they are made of overlapping plates.

Some examples (I am assuming that these small excerpts are considered fair use)

and a final heresy:

Now that's a rifleman dread.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

It's just artistic license really. Think of it as an opportunity to model yours more accurately to the artwork and get the milliput out!

If you actually look at the model of the Contemptor Dreadnought on Forge World and the various ones that must be around in the Gallery, they do have Knee pads like the art work.

I don't know why you don't have one but I know they are a separate part so may have been missed from your kit. You can either make your own (like Master of Asgard says) or contact FW and tell them yours were missing.

This is an image of the Contemptor from FWs site;

If I were you I'd ring FW and ask where your knee pads are. FWs customer service is normally outstanding, so get on the phone and let them know you're missing a part. Be worth having the bag it came in to hand, as it will have the batch number on it - they sometimes ask for it.

I have the knee pads, but they look nothing like the fan shaped ones in the Collected Visions artwork or even the ones on the plastic Epic dread:

Why go to all the trouble to sculpt a new dread and not follow the original model or the collected visions artwork for the lower legs? Even the original Epic plastic dread has the fan shaped knee guards. FW is supposed to all about the fluff, but I think they fluffed the detail here. Why make BattleTech styled pieces on a classic 40K design when the 40k style pieces would be more appropriate?

I think its quite weak really... but yes, there will be resculpting done...

I would assume they figured nobody would be overly offended if they changed the knee.

I guess they figured wrong.

True enough!

I have to admit that the whole issue never really bothered me...and that I was unaware of it until now...

Still, I'm always happy to see people's upgrades to existing kits!

I'm not offended by it, but I did point out back when the Comtemptor was released that the legs didn't really match the top half, design-wise.

So far as matching the artwork, it's not just the lower legs that are different. They were obviously going for 'inspired by' rather than an identical match. Besides, throughout GW's range you'll find countless examples of artwork that doesn't exactly match the models. Marine armour, (size, proportions and design) even allowing for the various marks, varies incredibly throughout GW's artwork, and always has.

I would put it down partly to artistic license and partly to the individually crafted or modified nature of most Imperial tech.
