On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hey guys

I was hoping to pick up some Mantic ForgeFathers soon, and use them as a counts-as for another army in 40k.
My question is however, at least until GW release rules for Demiurg ( ), if anyone is doing this currently and which ruleset they have used?

My first thought was the standard Marine or perhaps Space Wolves list. The other option would be a Salamander-esque list, simply because of the number of burning-style weapons in the FF range. The Hailstorm cannon could be used as perhaps either a Whirlwind, or maybe techmarine with cannon?
I have thought it might be amusing to make a 'marine spam' style army, lots and lots of infantry at the expense of elite unit types and vehicles.

To be honest this is an issue that goes back many years, from Squat players looking for a rules representation in the current ruleset, but I'd be interested to see as far as 'counts as' is concerned with the FF model range what ideas people have had!

I got lots of ideas, but sadly, mantic destroyed them with those bad decisions and plastics...

Anyway, my ideas was not so different from yours: Space Wolves, Salamanders, Khorne Chaos Marines, and a Very Strange Mechanized BA Assault Army (Assault squads in rhinos with priest and fist) + rifle dreads...
Drop pod assault salamanders/space wolves, using the boring machines from ramshackle games (or equivalents).

If my post show some BAD spelling issues, please forgive-me, english is not my natural language, and i never received formal education on it...
My take on Demiurgs (enjoy the reading):

I think there is some really cool stuff on the way, and when painted well I think the FF look awesome!

Anyway, I posted this question on another forum and received this extremely useful reply, for anyone thinking of doing something similar:

Yeah, you pretty much want to use them as some variety of Space Mehrines (anyone would think they were designed that way ).

Of the units that are currently out, the Huscarl would be your Commander/Chapter Master. Steel Warriors would be regular marines (especially with the forthcoming Drakkarim upgrade kit). Stormrage Veterans can be used as either devastator squads or to give some variety to heavy weapons in your regular unit. And the Cannon can either be used as a Whirlwind or Thunderfire Cannon (the melta variant when it comes out should make a good vindicator substitute IMO)

Of the stuff that has rules for Warpath but no models yet, the Light and Heavy Drakkar are functionally identical to Predators and Land Raiders (respectively), but there is no equivalent in 40K for the Fire Wyrm. Iron Ancestors are dreadnought equivalents (albeit lacking the range of variants in C:S&M) and Forge Guard will make good Terminator substitutes. Valkyr would probably equate to scout bikers (due to their low armour) which leaves the Brokkrs as regular scouts (but there is no SM character that could substitute for the Chief Brokkr).

Some other people have spoken about using them for Guard or even Orks, but IMO the above ties in quite nicely I think.

I think that a fairly vanilla SM army would be a good choice. The stats for Marines aren't as strong as the fluff anyway and their special rules fit a stoic dwarf race pretty well.

I don't think the Forge Fathers would do well as some of the more powerfull, specialized SM armies such as BA, SW, or BT, but as a basic SM force with an emphasis on infantry, they would very well represent the statline.

As guard they could work also, but unless you were going for an all vet-with-carapace force the massive armor would be a bit out of place.

Yes that was what I thought, they look far too tough for IG, and it would also be wrong dwarves dying in droves with T3

Someone else on another forum pointed out these excellent looking 'Termite'-type devices which could count as drop pods:

Excellent Idea. The ramshackle drill thingies would be an excellent affordable-yet-fluffy solution for Forgefather drop pods.

Good point about guardsmen not represening them well in HTH. They really do need to be a bit more stoic than that.

I was thinking ordo xenos Inq retinue/warband or some such, carapace/power armour and bolters. I dont think SM is the way to go. Squats (which is essentially what they are) were nearer to IG than SM IIRC, but these models have better armour and guns than the long sadly missed squats.
But ideally this would be in a GK list, without any GK`s, and not a single human in it either. Imagine harlequins as DCA, these guys as warriors, you could even use kroot or even orks. Oh the heresy( and my own daft ideas). This is the only list/book i feel you can really get away with using anything you want in as it gives you a base profile and loads of options to customize.

LOVE those termites by the way.

Yes that's definitely some good ideas. Like you say, the FF have a resemblance in terms of stature, but these miniatures are much better armoured than Squats ever were (just flak armour, with the exception of Hearthguard - on a side note, apparently the FF have a heavily armoured equivalent of those on the way).

I'm considering just skipping 40k altogether now and using the Tomorrows war book to make up some rules, there are far more graduations in terms of how powerful you want the units to be, and there are lots of other cool elements you can make in the rules (like when was the last time having re-breather and photo-visor meant anything in 40k beyond the BL books?)

I just found a copy of Fate of the Forgestar under my tree I plan on using the models for Warpath, but also for 40K. The Marauders will work great for Sluggas/Warbuggy. I will use the Forgefathers to build up a small Space Marine counts as army to play with friends (Steel Warriors = Tactical Marines, Hailstorm Cannon = Thunderfire Cannon, Stormguard = Heavy Weapons/Devastators, etc.). Would anyone like pics of the starter box contents? If so, let me know and I'll post some

Yes right, I'm sure I will get a bigger boxset at some point (either these guys or Corporation) with the free copy of the rules in, so no harm in giving it a whirl!

Yes, I'm not sure I've heard that there will be some more Warpath stuff in September (including more for Corporation and Forge Fathers), although I'm not sure about a re-launch of the rules themselves yet. I guess if the KoW one works though they probably will at some point.

TBH I've put the FF army on the backburner at the moment, and have only painted up a couple of squads so far. Not so much because of the models, which are lovely, but generally due to the opponents they are likely to be up against. None of the 40k players at my club seem to be bothered about painting their stuff, or even assemble it entirely in some cases, so it's a mass of unpainted dreadknights and chaos marines with no arms. Factor in crappy terrain as well, and the fact that after playing Infinity the 40k system seems like going back to a 8-bit NES game and I've lost all enthusiasm!

So, I might well get a load of stuff painted up at some point just for the modelling/painting, but part of me wonders why I should make the effort when hardly any of my potential opponents can even be bothered to do the same. I may well try and sub them in to the 'Tomorrow's War' ruleset if I can get anyone to try it out.

Pacific,
You do hit on a very good point. In my experience, Warpath really needs a large army to function. I've enjoyed playing it because I and my opponent already have large 40k armies that WYSIWYG match the warpath stats with few mods. The idea of painting an entire army from scratch for Warpath is daunting and playing with/against unpainted figs is uninspiring and something I avoid whenever possible.

I prefer warpath rules to 40k, but in my experience 40k can work quite well at low points levels, but warpath really suffers in this respect. For smaller level games Tomorrow's War is a good option though the playstyle is completely different. Warpath is Sci-Fantasy like 40k, whereas Tomorrow's War is Hard-Sci-Fi in the tradition of games like stargrunt or TW"s modern predecessor Ambush Alley.

Check out my AAR/review of Warpath. It compares it to both 40k and WarEngine, my favorite free Sci-Fantasy ruleset.

Bit of a shame to hear that the guys in your local gaming area have no intrest in the hobby aspect of wargaming, I can see how that would be uninspiring.

But on the other hand, maybe if you paint your stuff up to a decent level it could set an example to the other players, may even encourage them to improve their own armies.
After all, having a cool looking Warpath army on the table might even bring more players into the game within your area, at the very least your own army will look great and
thats alot more inportant than how other peoples armies look in comparsion.

It could just be another way of looking at it Pacific

Well I'm not sure.. I've seen the same unpainted pair of Marine legs for about 6 months now, smiting in the name of the Emperor

I agree completely about getting motivated to paint your stuff, and I remember some years ago having the feeling of wanting to have an army that would stand up well on the tabletop to some of the stuff the other players had.

But I guess a lot of it comes down to the gaming 'culture' surrounding a game - a lot of the FoW and WFB guys seem to take a lot more pride in their army's appearance, and extend that to the battleground and making it look good. But, I don't know why but for the 40k crowd that doesn't seem to be important or necessary, and instead they have excitable sounding conversations and get a tent-pole working out if they can squeeze 6 razorbacks into a 'build'. It makes my blood run cold

I think a lot of this comes down to 40k being considered a beer & pretzels game (for understandable reasons). The only real hobby work that is encouraged in any way is 3-colour minimum and a single basing, and that's only if you in a tournament, in terms of casual play well anything goes, its a real shame to see for any dedicated hobbyist.

Trust me I know how you feel about getting uninspired with your hobby work, I live in Cornwall and currently don't even know of any local wargaming groups, its going to be about 8 months (PAW2013) before I get a game in, until then it's all hobby stuff for myself.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hey guys,

Just got these 3 of the AT-43 Red Blok walkers through the post, with a view to use them in some capacity with the rest of the force. They are a little bit smaller than I envisaged them to be.

Personally I think they look pretty good for a kind of 'mining/industrious dwarves in space' look - like some kind of high pressure suit, or perhaps used for doing EVO in dense asteroid fields and the like (then being fitted with weapons retroactively when the time comes to defend their homes!) They are also just about the right size that you can imagine one of the un-armoured dwarves being sat inside and piloting it.
Now of course it is going to be repainted to fit the aesthetic of the other models. But, my thought is what can I use them 'counts as' for the force for use in 40k?

Previously, I had hoped to use them at Dreadnoughts. But, I have 3 of them (3 dreadnoughts being a bit excessive!), and I think they are perhaps a touch small. Also, I will most likely use the Mantic Iron Ancestor model as a Dreadnought, as it has a lot more of a visual presence/intimidation factor.

So what to use these as? My other thought was 'counts as' terminators. Or, perhaps if I worked the ally slot using Imperial Guard I could use them as Sentinels (but then that means having to find something else to proxy as 'troops' from the IG codex!)

Thoughts and ideas very welcome!

Like those suits.

I'd go for, as has been suggested, a GK army with Coteaz and just spam out Inquisitorial Warbands with bolters and power armour.

Look at how many Warrior Acolytes with Bolters and Power Armour you can spam... seriously... it's not even funny; GKs are better at hordes than IG!

Thought I'd give the whole 'Blogger' lark a go...
-Cadian 812th (rotting in a cupboard)
-Dark Angels 3rd Company (in disfavour, eBay?)
-Irun'Mahn (pretty and deserve love; why aren't I giving them it?)
-Draigo 'n' his Merry Band (to be continued) - How to magnetise Grey Knight strike squads' two-handed and special weapons
-The Maggot Host
