So I wondered what do these elegant battle tanks use as their propellant? I remember reading from somewhere that these things can run on pretty much anything, including wood, minerals, Promethium, coal or even excrement.
I wonder is there any truth in these things or is it just fanfiction.

Hatred, anger, and intolerance.....failing that they can take a wizz in the fuel tank.
But as stated by Coolyo294, Promethium is the likely standard fuel, but depending on where it was produced it could be higer tech or much lower, everything from fuel cells to coal burning, its what has kept this imperial classic in the field for thousands of years...that and well..everyone has parts for them.
And may also be adaptable for local conditions, likely its a very robust fuel system.

I think the engine in the Russ can run on many different types of fuel...I think one of the guard codices states that. Obviously Promethium is the preferred and probably most efficient fuel for it.
Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.
They are so badly designed that the Emperor of Man ( or Tzeentch, we will never know ) in his infinite mercy decided that they can run on the prayers of their most certainly doomed crews.
Of course, the filthy, toaster worshiping infidels of the Mechanicus claim that the tanks also need some kind of fuel ( Promethium, Diesel, burned heretics...) but clearly such claims are
nothing but the heretical denial of the Emperor's ( or Tzeentch's ) infinite power and mercy.
Promethium, a general term for any flammable liquid used as fuel in the Imperium. Apparently similar to refined petroleum, it's apparently derived from a variety of sources, such as Ice Planets, subterranean deposits, etc. (got the last part from Ciaphas Cain: The Traitor's Hand).
I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

Lemun Russ Tanks, and most vehicles in the imperium, run on Multi-fuel. This is the generic term for fuel in the Imperium and applies to any type of flammable liquid that will combust.
The engines of the IoM's vehicles are extremely robust and will take just about anything. Including Bio-fuels, Promethium, Alcohol, and any tyoe of oil or fat.
Promethium is the equivilant to our modern day petrochemicals. Due to its relative scarcity it isn't used as fuel for most of the Imperium, instead it is reserved for use as Flamer propellent, lubrication, and other tasks.
certain vehicles will use Promethium as their fuel source, space marines for example.

Thanks for your answers. I imagined that either they run on chemicals like Promethium or then they run on like most things in the Imperium: screaming bald men with hate to spare

Always the most simple and the most correct one. Good job as always Coolyo
And to add to this, his engine is build it such way that even without Promethium it can run on almost everything else. From wood to grease and petrol. See Imperial Armory for that info, I think.

LR's can run on just about anything, but a basic kind of flammable liquid like diesel seems to be the most efficient and standard option.
Really, the LR and most Imperial vehicles in general have to be able to use something other than fossil fuels as there's no way the Imperial warmachine would be able to organize the logistical capability to keep all the millions of Regiments in fighting condition. It's why they made it so a Russ can run on literal dirt if it has to. We'd get "fuel worlds", mass fuel fleets, indeed fuel shortages on the army level would probably doom the Imperium.

That's a bit exaggerated. You won't keep your tank rolling by pooping in its engine if that's what you wonder.
But yes, a leman russ engine is quite versatile. It can't run on literally ANYTHING, but it can run on a lot of things. Standard fuel in the IG seems to be promethium. And I think it's likely that the leman russ engine works best with this kind of fuel. But If you run out of promethium, I'm sure unrefined oil or some lubricant would do the trick. Of course, your tank wouldn't be in top condition, and you'd probably use up your engine more quickly, but your leman russ would still be rollin'.
And a LR engine's combustion chamber only works on liquids, so no wood or coal in here.
