I posted this in my re-introduction thread but figured I'd ask here too. I'm trying to get back into things after being out for about five years. I've seen plenty of rumors around the web that 6th Edition is incoming shortly but nothing official. Since this will most likely come with the obligatory new Space Marine codex and miniatures I'm in a bit of a dilemma. Should I go ahead and get the current codex, rules and miniatures or should I wait for the new edition to roll around?

If you are getting the Vanilla space marines codex and models then you really have nothing to fear. That is probably the safest army you can buy before 6th. You also won't hear anything "Official" until two weeks before release. It's GW's stupid new policy. However, if it's any army besides Vanilla SM, I would probably wait. We don't really have any idea what to expect for 6th.

My preferred chapter is the Scythes of Emperor so I'd be going vanilla. Their fluff has always fascinated me plus their color scheme seems pretty straight forward for someone starting out. You don't think it would be a waste if their just going to come out with new stuff in six months or so?

I would personally say that you can be fairly sure that buying tactical marines, predators and dreadnoughts will be safe. If the melta-meta goes, and you need to build a new round of guys with plasma guns, that still won't be all that big a change to your list.

We don't know when 6th edition will come. It's speculated it will be during 2012. In case that comes true I wouldn't buy the big £40 rulebook now, I would buy the small AoBR book. It's more portable too.
They won't replace all the SM models so you're safe there. At worst they might change some of the weapon selections in a unit.
If you want to play you are pretty much stuck with obtaining in some way the codex for your army. It's only going to be a problem if they do a new codex early on.

I had the same issue, having recently gotten back into the hobby. I think it really depends on what you are going to focus on. I'm mostly modeling and painting right now, and I'm not even sure if I'll play before 6E rolls around, if the rumors and speculation are accurate.
If you really want to play, I'd say go ahead and get your codex and one of the Assault on Black Reach rule books off ebay. As others have pointed out, there's no firm date on when 6E will be released, and more specifically, when the Space Marine codex will be updated for it.
Also, my old 2e and 3e Space Marine models are all still valid. I don't think you have to worry about GW somehow invalidating any minis you buy.

The mechanics of the rules are not going to change that much. It is much better to start now and have the flow of the game down, and make adjustments later, rather than waiting. You will never get these days back.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time. |

I would start building the core of your army, an HQ and a couple of troops choices, maybe a HS, FA or elite choice, and play a few small games. That way you have a very safe core army to build on when 6th ed rolls around, and you can get used to how the game works as well.
That's just IMHO though!

Even if new stuff comes out, anything that's a plastic kit will probably remain as is. The Space Marines, at their core, have had largely the same army composition since 2nd edition around 1993 or so. Tactical Marines in Rhinos supported by Terminators, Predators, Land Raiders, Dreadnoughts, bikers and Assault Marines has always worked just fine, and probably always will.
Space Marines as a whole have always been a very safe army. You'll be fine; better to get some practice now. As for rules changes, the game will probably play largely the same in 6th edition. GW's been for evolution as opposed to revolution in their game design, and as a result many rules go unchanged, or only slightly changed for the better.

I'm having the same problem with my new Tau army, supposedly they are scheduled to get one of the first codeces in 6th edition... They are also rumored to get many new units so making a good list is hard right now...

Which can be used as Crypteks or one of their new guard units just fine. While they aren't "Pariahs" anymore, they can serve as something else that's actually useful.

Hah, good point! Good thing I never bought any of them anyhow. All my other 'crons are still just as useful, and pariahs could be used as lychguard, lords, or maybe crypteks without too much issue.
