Is it just me or are these guys an unholy pain in the ass to assemble? I love the models - so much so that I'm reconsidering fielding them in my finished lizardmen army based on look alone - but they just aren't made to hang together. All those tiny vertical contact points on the riders!

The context is this: I'm easing back into Games Workshop minis after spending a couple of months more focused on my Privateer Press armies. I had a Lizardmen Battalion sitting around gathering dust - I'd bought it just before finding out about the Hordes tournament that consumed the next month of hobby time - and now that I'm nearly done painting my terrifying monsters, I figured I'd start assembling my lizards. Of all the things in the box, the cavalry seemed like the best place to start. I didn't think I was likely to field them in the end, so they made a good place to brush the rust off.

Big mistake.

It's a good thing I got over my fear of pinning and greenstuff while building Privateer Press's practically all metal all the time line, because these guys are going to take a lot of both. Every arm and every head needed to be pinned. Every lance arm needed to be drilled all the way through in order to cleave strongly enough to the pin, leaving a hole in the shoulder that will need to be puttied over. Every. Single. One.

Am I the only guy to have this problem? Am I crazy? A perfectionist? Or are these guys actually a pain in the ass to assemble?

Beautiful, but a pain in the ass?

Is it the old chubbysaurus cavarly? The ones with the plastic mounts and metal riders? Because if so, it is not just you. I bought 10 of the bastids and never got around to assembling them before I sold off my lizardmen. Terrible models.

LOL, nice rant. I've never put those ones together but trust me when I say we've all gone through this. Man I've had to put lots of models together where nothing stays in place, your doing crazy balancing acts with the models trying to keep the glue in place, meanwhile the glue is making your fingers stick to everything including the piece you are trying to set, but its not dry yet and keep falling out of place cuz its stuck to your finger. lol and sometimes you just wonder wtf am I doing, who t eff designed this thing, lol.

DE Cold Ones look so much better...

Although, I'm surprised that you'd have trouble coming back from PP models! I'm going the other way, and it's shocking how hard it is to get some of the metal ones to go (and stay) together well... end result is worth it, of course, but I've glued my fingers a number of times now...

It wasn't trouble, exactly. Pinning plastic is easy as pie. The finished models look quite nice, I think. It was more just surprisingly a huge pain in the ass.

Also, these aren't the chubbysaurs. They're the new all-plastic models. And yeah, the chubbysaurs look pretty silly.

I've got to say that I really like the look of the Lizardmen Cold Ones. I like that they're a little more massive, a little more substantial. It makes them look like real live living things. The Dark Eldar Cold Ones look sharper and more ethereal, less organic, but more appropriate to the DE asethetic.

The current LM cold ones would be pretty great with a better face and less derpy arms. If you can sculpt you'd get great use out of them as long as you don't mind needing half a stick of greenstuff to get the riders to actually fit on them with all the space there's usually left there.

I can relate, with both GW and PP models... I think it hits you the most when it's a surprise (i.e., the Dire Trolls I mentioned above I expected to be hard... the plastic fennblades, on the other hand, were a shock as to how difficult it was to just pop their joined arms onto their bodies, and thus more memorable ).
