Next to marines(yes, I'm tossing all of you into one pot!), orks are probably the most played race of all.

There is a guy regularly doing polls on this forum and usually orks end up in the fourth to fifth spot, right behind the trinity and the flavor of the month army.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

A lot of people play Orks. They're one of the most popular armies in the game, and they've been well represented in every single group I've ever been in. Last week when I went gaming, half the people there were playing Orks, and for the most part everything was painted. Maybe your local store doesn't have them well represented, but a lot of people play them and they obviously sell well, or else GW wouldn't keep pumping out Ork kits. Orks are awesome, and everyone loves them.

Two of our 7 players have orcs as their primary or secondary army.

Primary Armies:
Black templars
Eldar
IG
Blood Angels
Chaos Marines
Space Wolves
Orks

Secondary:
Orks
Salamanders
Nids
Tau
Necrons
Crimson Fists

While I don't play at the game store, when I'm in there, I've seen a number of ork armies. Some people might be intimidated by the thought of painting an ork foot army, but I can't say I have an hard numbers on if that's why they aren't #1.

Anyone that says Orks are not that good is doing it wrong, IMHO, YMMV, KIR.

Until I started playing at my stores, the common opinion was that orks suck, due to three ork players being two guys playing solely for fluff and pay no attention to listbuilding or advance tactics, and the other being a 12-year old boy. It's really easy to play terrible with orks.

Nowadays people cover in fear when I start unpacking battlewagons, go figure

There is a fourth player with a huge army sitting in one store's showcases, but I have never met him, so I doubt that he is still an active player. Another two ork armies I have seen belong to guys that only ever play their pals, and no pick-up games. So I know at least seven ork armies (mine included) across two stores.

They are, I'd wager, probably the most popular xeno army.

Orks are a very popular race but i noticed it normally either attracts the fun loving or the obsessive gamer who wants to have this populat race.

My first army was necrons, I like the idea of them and I played them when they were not even an officially army! When they got their first codex i was so bored of their tactics and blandness I was upset and sold the army trying out the orks

I was in love! I kicked ass took names and feared no other when orks use to double init when they waaaghed... Sadly i fell on hard times and had to sell the army. I stopped playing for many years and when i came back i wanted to play something with tactics... I thought hey why not eldar... it didn't last long lol

Instead i ended up trading the army for the startings of my orks and I have been there ever since and have no plans on leaving. I have probably 4000 pts in orks and I am proud to say despite flash gitz i own at least 1 squad of every type of ork unit out there.

In short, I would say orks are normally for the people who have grown accustomed to 40k and have love for the orks. Normally brand new gamers gravitate towards influence from the game store owners or suggestions from friends.

I would say for some people orks just aren't a thing till someone demonstrates how fun it can be.

I don't play my orks very much anymore, but there are few things more fun than converting ork vehicles.

In fairness, every other xenos army is unforgiving to novice players. Eldar and Dark Eldar require a lot of finesse to work properly, and Tau are so flimsy in assault that it takes a skilled player to keep them away from it (or at least sacrifice units to it to keep pumping out firepower). It's literally possible to plop 180 boyz on the table and win through sheer volume of fire and/or bodies without a whole lot of skill required.

Honestly, I would guess that most people don't buy them because it's an extremely daunting army to start. Unless you play an elite-heavy army with lots of Nobz (which I have yet to see anyone play) it's anywhere between $25 and $75 to run a single troop choice. A lot of their elite choices only come in 5-man packs (Lootas, Tankbustas, Nobz, Kommandos) and the codex in general is very spammy by its nature. It's an expensive army to play, and that's not even considering the fact that painting is a matter of quite possibly painting 100+ models for just a moderately large army.

Awwwwwww, that's sad. Here *hugs* if you're going ork-free, you aren't going hug-free.

I didn't vote. If you're not coming into a lot of orks, it's because there are not a lot of ork players in your club.
