Deadly Dire Avenger

Hello,
I'm the first to admit I'm not the best painter in the world but I have actually quite impressed myself with my Hesperax model
The only thing I'm struggling with is painting her eyes and was wondering how some of you would paint good eyes?
Thanks

Don't know about Hesperax specifically but a good method to paint eyes is like this:
1. Paint a dark brown in the socket.
2. Paint a white line inside it.
3. Paint a black dot on the upper part of the white line, overlapping the top edge of the brown more than the bottom edge.

Reaper has a great tutorial for painting eyes: Bette Davis Eyes Work prevents Reaper's page from coming up, but Google provides the link - top of the page. I use this for all my character models and RPG miniatures. Very easy and looks great.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Anyway, I paint the sockets white, then thinned black ink to line the socket and a black line in the centre. Pretty similar to that reaper tutorial really

He writes all his gallery comments like that too. And they all seem to be Khorne related. Its quite annoying. So i wouldnt expect him to stop it any time soon. Unless someone in a position of power could maybe have a quiet word with him.... hmmm?

Thanks to Gavin Thorne for the Reaper link. While I wouldn't do things identically, the idea I would suggest is the same: Do the eyes first, then dial the inevitably crazed looking blobs back. It's the same as your own anatomy, really. The eye is a big white ball with a round iris and pupil, most of which is occluded by the eyelids. Make your oversized dots, then cover them with flesh (paint) until they're the proper shape.

One thing I do, is paint the skin, do the wash, then do the eyes,
then do the highlights for the skin.
I use highlights for the skin to cover any stray marks.

I agree with Malfred's method. It's built up enough to not interrupt with the eyes, while still allowing slight cleanup without too much of an issue.
For eyes I paint the socket black, carefully of course. Then add in white dots to the edges or one dot to only one side if I want them to be looking in a specific direction. It helps if you pay attention to the flow of the model as well as the eyes can really change it, by adding in emotion. For example a model aiming in one direction but looking in the other can, depending on how small the iris appears, could be shocked, surprised or simply looking for a target.
In my opinion it is easier to have a model looking off to the side instead of straight on. If you decide to paint white over the black socket then add in the iris and pupil later you need to be careful as it can lead to crazy eyes pretty easily.

Never paint the eye white then fill in the dot. You'll get goofy, "staring" eyes like this:
You should paint the eye black, then fill in the sides with white dots:
This will often leave a tiny bit of black around the white which gives the eyes real definition, like wearing eyeliner.

Now y'see I disagree with that. I always white, then dot, then do eyelids. There's nothing wrong with the eyes in the top photo there, they're just not finished; painting the eyelids over would remove the crazy stare effect.

I find going the eyes in white then dotting in the pupil with a really fine fineliner pen works, you need one with the finest point, I think mines 005 something like that

Panting in the white and then painting in the dot works if
you can get that dot up against the upper border where the
white meets the skin/wash. I learned to jab upward with the
brush when dotting the eye.
I don't have the best results, but they work just fine.
