um... my computer?

This may be a bit off topic, but I had to tell some people who would appreciate the special situation presented to me. I have been playing 40K for the last 15 years. In that time Ive had many girlfrinds, a wife (now ex-wife) and a lot of strange looks. Most of the time they just shrug and say "Thats Larrys goofy hobby" or ignore that chunk of me entirely. This time around is slightly different. Heres how it started off.

I get a random text one night (probably around 7 or so) from the girl I just started seeing asking what I was doing. I respond with a picture of a half painted SM and a thumbs-up. As usual I get a genaric "thats cool" and life goes on. Minutes pass and I get another message, "So.... hwta are those little space men for?". The rest of the conversation goes around the usual circle of trying to explain to her that it is kind of like a board game, but without a board and these are the peices. Most of you know how this story goes. After a while she sounds really interested in the background of it all (shes a big sci-fi nerd) so I tell her to jump on 40k Wiki and have a read around.

Hours pass in silence. (Side note: I did get a good amount of painting done in the mean time.) I will remember the next message exactly for a very long time.

"THIS IS THE COOLEST F***ING THING IVE EVER SEEN!!!"

At forst I thought she was mocking me and ignored it. She then threw about a dozen questions at me (via text) for everything from what the Eye of Terror actually is to what is a Golden Throne. I was blown away. I sealed my paint pots and spead over there with the BRB and Codexes in hand. A couple hors later I had to run home again to grab 500 pt forces for my SM and Tau, as well as my comp with Army Builder on it. We played. Then we played again. Then she almost beat me. The next morning (I speant the night. Score) we went to the FLGS and started her Emperors Children/Slaanesh army. Mind you, this is not for the pink. She made that part very clear. She appearently has a thing for Lucias.

So now, fellow Dakkites, I can confidently say that I am a very lucky guy. Wont be long before shes kicking my butt adn bragging about how her placement at Games Day was higher than mine. See you on the table.

Congratulations!

As kind of a side note I think most people if brought into the hobby of non-videogame gaming would reallt enjoy it if they were brought in the right way.

High five man!!

I am in your lucky club too, while she ain't particularly wanting to play (thought she has hinted she might give it a go) she really enjoys picking up a paintbrush and painting for a couple of hours with me and she loves the stories and stuff behind it!

Got my fiance into the hobby. She's not so much into the gaming as I am, but she likes playing with me, rolling dice and pushing pretty models around the table.

She's also a fantastic painter. God damn. Takes her a few hours to paint a Dire Avenger, but sweet beard of Zeus, do they look fantastic.

Its definitely nice to not worry about her getting mad if I go have a game or paint. She'll likely come join or paint with me.

It's funny you bring this up, as I was just about to make a new thread about the best way to get your girl into WH40k. Well I was until I read this one, heh.

She likes the fluff stuff and all but I want her to get into the actual gaming aspect of it as well. Maybe I'll just from there and see about getting her a couple models from any of the ones she likes and have her assemble and paint them and see how that goes.

Congrats to you for finding a girl just as nerdy as we all are.

My girlfriend, possibly soon Fiance, of over a year is also my main playbuddy. I got into WH40k sometime in June. At first I could just convince her to pick up a few models and paint with me, but once I got a Tyranid force super cheap on Ebay, she had to play with the swarm. That she know thinks of as hers.

Necrons are her new baby though.

She paints better than I do, I think. I'm always playing catchup trying to paint all of my imperial guard infantry to reasonable levels. She picks up a single model and puts in some great detail.

Heh, after I got married back in October, I was finally able to start getting into 40k. About 3 weeks into it, my wife starts to inquire about it and before you know it, I had gotten her the SW battleforce & the codex & then to top it off, she loves painting & she's quite good at it naturally. I, on the other hand, stink but I love assembling, so I assemble and she paints. Perfect combo :-D

um... my computer?

Update:

Its been two weeks since her discovery of 40k. She decided to go with a pure Slaanesh demon army after reading the Chaos Demons codex. I mean that literally. SHE READ THE WHOLE CODEX! Who does that? Last night she finished her first squad of Demonettes and working on her second. Our date nights now turn into us sitting around the table painting and listening to music (or Firefly playing in the background). I think this weekend were road tripping out to Memphis about 3 hours away. For those of you who dont know, thats where the main distrobution warehouse for the US is. *geek squeel*

Not saying congrats to the OP, but I find I need a outlet of "MY TIME" , and that's me going over to a buddies and playing D&D, video games, or 40k.

Heh, I recall explaining the 40k background to my fiancee when I was watching the Ultramarines movie.

What are they? They're Space Marines, like, engineered super soldiers.
Why do they fight? They're warrior monks, they fight to protect humanity.
Do they get paid, or get women? No, they're chaste, and they don't get paid for fighting.
They should start a union.
*about this time the Emperor is mentioned in the movie*
Who is the Emperor?
He's an immortal-
There can be only one (she says this any time immortal is mentioned)
-highly psychic person who led humans on a crusade to conquer the galaxy. Now he's crippled and sits on the golden-
Okay, I only wanted a brief description. This is dumb.

To be fair, she doesn't mind that I play it. She even likes some nerd things (she's been getting into comics, watches and even knows about sci fi moves). 40k just isn't her thing.

My wife of 24+ years now got me my first 40k game set, 2nd ed. She doesn't play but likes watching me and my friends sometimes and likes to watch me paint and build. She likes that it helps me relax and she doesn't get jealous of my friends coming over to play. She understands how much I like it and with that I don't complain about her going to Bingo, even tho I explain that I can get money back from my hobby where as she can't. hehe

That's what Skyrim's for. It's only one player.

I don't think I could handle dating a guy that didn't play 40k or RPGs.

Too bad, I already have one that buys me demolishers just so he can get extra raffle tickets for the local GW store's Boxing Day Giffle.

Last year he got me a battleforce for Christmas I was so happy.

There is one distinct advantage to both people in a relationship sharing 40k as their hobby. There are only three places you need to consider for Christmas and birthdays:

- GW
- BL
- FW

no arsing about shopping with "oooh, do you think he'd like some crappy cologne or a new golf club?"
