Subject: Would/Should Giants ever be competitive?

It is almost like a law that giants are there for the fun factor, not for their tactical usefulness. Stuck at around 200 or so points with the same slightly random rules, they just arent as effective as anything else. Do you think this is what GW had in mind? True, if giants were really good then all the armies that can take giants might take too many or pehaps then giants might stop feeling like....giants if they lose their randomness factor. On the other hand, putting them in each book almost seems wasteful, as there is very little change besides some added on rules like chaos marks. They mind as well have a little pamphlet for giant rules to print off or something
Thoughts?

Terror used to be terrifying. And Giants were more impressive then. And war machines were maybe a bit less terrifying. And spells certainly.
I almost consider them a throwback to...damn, what's that rule? Um, when you could take units from other armies. Mercenaries or whatever. Dogs. Something dogs. Reservoir dogs.
Anyway, they gave a lot of armies it for the fun factor, the money factor ($50), and as a big guy everyone can have.
The O&G/Ogre Giant is 200pts exactly. O&G can even get a ward 6. I don't think that's terrible. Is it a huge threat? No. But a unit available to so many shouldn't be a game stopper or everyone would have them and all lists would be the same.

Dogs of War is what you mean.
I've never used or come up against a Giant so I couldn't tell you how effective they are.

I think if they made Giant's much more deadly but made them less common, the giants have typically been odd and unpredictable
Like if they made it only 1 per army (maybe 2 if the army is huge) it'd be cool.

This thread has inspired me to think about an armored slave giant for my Dark Elves. Could look cool.

As a person who fights against Giants, I disagree. They have one excellent role; monster hunting. Most other big monsters in the game are at I 2-3, and Thump With Club is an amazing way to vaporize the monsters of other races.

They are good at monster hunting, sadly the prelavence of cannons has made monsters large point sinks(except for those with some kind of save/special ability to counter shooting)
To make giants a decent all around choice to take they would need some things to be done with them.
If giants could purchase armor saves(scaly skin) or higher toughness then they would much better(their real weakness is to large amounts of low str shooting as its quite easy to plink off a giants wounds)
If they were cheaper. Monsters as a whole are largely overcosted, except for the few that are horrendously undercosted(which are also the ones that actually have saves to deal with shooting) Giants with their current stats at 150-175 points would be viable to run in multiples, but wouldn't be overpowered either. Sure they might do a number on other monster heavy lists, but weakness balances out their strengths.

They're also stubborn, though. If they were that cheap, don't you think they could be just rammed down the faces of huge infantry blocks and hold them there while flanks come in and tear them apart?
Not that I'm against breaking up of large infantry, but I don't want to see "The Can-opener" become its replacement.
I like the fact that each army is very individual. Right now Giants don't vary too much per army except maybe cost. It'd be cool if they had something specific to each race. Like Warpaint in O&G and Marks with WoC.

Giants can work, but you need to design the list around them, and because of the random nature of their attacks it is maaybe not worth it.

Nice tip, thanks! Maybe I'll be inspired to field mine, which hasn't seen the table since I painted it...

I made the mistake at Cap City 2011 of engaging double giants with my dwarfs in combat. I made the mistake of thinking "Oh, they're a weak choice, so don't worry about them." And then didn't shoot them with my war machines. Which is what makes them a "weak" choice. Don't know what I was thinking.
I recognize on paper that they're just not going to hack it in most match-ups, but I would absolutely include them in any game that wasn't tournament oriented.
