Alright, say I purchase a Drop Pod as a Dedicated Transport for another unit which I keep in reserve, must they enter play via the drop pod or can I swap the squad for a different unit, ie a Dreadnought?

You can't swap (it's a dedicated transport) but you are not required to enter play in the pod - it just drops empty.

However you can purchase pods for most dreads.

I know, it's just if I purchase it along with an Assault Squad, I get it for free points wise.
