It's an emotionally laden story, but ultimately you have to question how the military was supposed to deal with these types of human remains. It's not like you can keep them around until someone claims them in some sort of warehouse of horrors.
Nor would it be appropriate to give out ashes to family members without specifically connecting the remains to that family.
I suppose scattering the ashes at sea is "proper," but the EPA might have a fit over that.
I wonder what medical colleges do with their 'leftovers.'

From what I understand, the organs/bits are returned to the body and it is stitched up and then cremated/buried/whatever the family want to do with it. At least this is how the human cadavers were dealt with at the university I went to in the UK. Same kind of process as bodies which have undergone autopsy.
In respect of the remains of misc soldiers, surely they can be weaponised in some way? Cyborgs? Or at the very least, compacted into some kind of bullet or shell?

Yes, but what happens to the ashes?

The body itself is placed in a "body bag" and quickly removed from the area by blackhawks/chinooks. I've the a feeling that the small "remains" are from individuals who were victims of IED's. You still have bits and pieces either around the det site or scattered inside a vehicle. "Bits" are bagged and moved on to morturary affairs units at least a couple of days after the body has been processed.

There's really no need as the AF acknowledged it already. The story broke in the Washington Post. This is a more comprehensive article.
http://articles.cnn.com/2011-12-08/us/us_military-remains-landfill_1_body-parts-military-personnel-commercial-landfill?_s=PM:US
Only 274 were IDENTIFIED of a little over 900 pieces tested, over 1700 were never tested which means the number could much higher.

Since the landfill dumping ended three years ago, such cremated partial remains are now buried at sea.
It seems that the answer wasn't hard for you to come up with on your own in what K assume was a matter of minutes or less, amazing that SOMEONE at mortuary affairs at Dover couldn't think that up before trucking them from Delaware to Virginia to toss them in a landfill.

It's like Silver said, they give them to the family if that is wished, or dispose of them in a respectful manner. It is a big item for medical scools and the like to treat cadavers with respect, since a lot of the donars are benifiting science and medicine with their choice of donation.

I don't give a gak what they do with me once I'm dead, I wouldn't like to think that the lads would be forced to go back into a dangerous situation just to get my cadaver ala these guys.. I feel that its an emotional story so people don't make a rational response, but what's the big deal here? Its like not old body parts are of use to anyone.
If possible, I would like my remains to be kept by the Navy. Then they could outfit me in a big metal suit with a spiky DU helmet, and then load me into a torpedo tube and fire my stiffened metal clad corpse at an enemy ship.
That would be cool, and its my body, but im sure the pesky liberals would defy my last wishes.

Believe it or not it's a textbook maneuver although usually it involves one of the crew members riding on the outside.
