So, I have this bright red battlewagon. It looks way too clean for my taste. Now, before I go to town and weather it up, I'm looking for some advice.

What tutorials/methods would you recommend for a dirty/rusty/chipped look without going wayy OTT? Preferably something that looks good on red. I painted flames and checks on it, and I don't really want them too obscured. I know for sure I will be muddying up the trakks/tires, but other than that I'm kind of stuck.

I can post a pic of it later today if that would help.

Thanks Dakka!

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/274682.page - If you have an airbrush. (BTW this is not my thread.)

You could try to replicate this model. It's a Sons of Orar Land raider, and its red! If you don't want to go OTT just tone down the wear n tear.

If you don't have an airbrush you could always do rust streaks/scratches with a paintbrush. For the rust just brush from lowest to highest, making the streak wider as it goes higher. For scratches just follow this pic

Just paint thin lines with a 1/1 mix of Chaos black and Scorched Brown. Next highlight the bottom edges of those "scratches" with a highlight color. like Yellow-Orange for Red.

Here is an example of battle damage and rust on one of my pieces. its not red but it might help.

Thanks man, that LR was really inspiring. I don't have an airbrush, but your brush-on pic/explanation really helped. I'll try that out.

Btw, FANTASTIC work on that dread sarcophagus. Beautiful scratches.

To knock the color down a bit you can use a brown wash as well - brown works really well on red. I use W&N Peat Moss Ink to make the wash.

A good way to get a "splatter of rust is using a good size flat brush and a piece of card.

Hold the brush a few centimetres from your model and then draw the card over the brush away from the model. What ever paint you have on the brush will splatter on to the model. Be carfull not to have to much paint on your brush though.

Great suggestions guys! Thanks! I settled mainly for the sponge technique after I tried RunningWithScissors' scratch method above. It looked good but was a bit too time consuming to do a whole BW. I painted it last night, and I'm pretty happy with it. I'll post pics tonight!

Good choice - I was going to recommend the sponge technique. I look forward to seeing the results!
